The sudden return of 90+ degree heat is unpleasant.
Not because I dislike the heat, because I unironically like 90+ degree hot, humid weather, but because it's given the ragweed fresh life. I'm sneezing non-stop.

Unfortunately we have to do this again
The GOP broke off bipartisan talks with Dems to shore up ACA's insurance markets, and now they're trying - again - to unilaterally repeal ACA and take with it a huge chunk of Medicaid (which will, of course, completely destabilize our entire healthcare system, but that's where we are).

You can find more information by googling Graham-Cassidy, but here's one link.

Apparently, Lindsey Graham - one of the bill's sponsors - got on Breitbart radio (yes, now we're integrating Breitbart into GOP mainstream, fun times ahead) to urge listeners to call in support of the new bill, so it's VERY IMPORTANT that the Senate be flooded with opposition calls.

Here is one script and information resource.

d*mmit, i'm a responsible adult!
today, i *finally* managed to finish mowing the far back yard.  for the *second* time this summer.  the problem has been a combination of the weather and the fact that the entire neighborhood drains through my yard.  if it's a dry year, like last year - no problem.  if the weather pattern is 'rain hard enough to produce standing water in the low places of the neighborhood, dry out just enough to tease you about it, rain to produce standing water *again*, lather-rinse-repeat', you get the situation i had this summer - i could barely mow the front yard 3-4 times since june, and haven't been able to *get* to the backyard to mow it at *all* since june.  and the grass here grows like bamboo in the summer rainy season.  as a result, i have enough grass hay to see if i can burn a tree with it (one on the interior of the yard, not the back fence!).  i'm seriously considering doing this as an experiment....

-boogieshoes, kinda lawn-mower stinky right now....

Kindle?
Out of curiosity, is anyone interested in a Kindle Paperwhite. It's the previous edition, so it's not the latest one, but it still works perfectly fine. Pretty much the only time that I use it nowadays is when I'm traveling via plane, which I don't see happening any time soon since I don't plan on going back to Tennessee for the holidays this year. So since my checking account is still somewhat lighter than I'd like, I thought that I'd at least see if anyone might want one.

I also still have quite a few things available in the virtual garage sale post that I put up several weeks ago. And I'm very much willing to haggle when it comes to listed prices, if you're interested in anything.

(Oh, and for those of you who donated to my Ko-fi page and requested fic, it's coming! The last few weeks have been absolutely hell, which deserves its own post, but things are calming down and I actually have time to breathe again.)

The joys of parenting as a history nerd.
We were reviewing the kidlet's U.S. history project on Colonial Virginia, which involved Jamestown, and I took it kind of farther than his teacher did. (I do that a lot. History is broadly expansive.) Also I got to explain that Captain John Smith was an asshole, and I got to whine later to Mr. Havoc that I really don't like Pocahontas (the Disney film), not because I don't like Pocahontas (she was awesome), but because John Smith was an asshole, not a romantic lead.

You have no idea how much my dad told me about John Smith and Jamestown when I was a kid. You really have no idea.

So I also learned that the kidlet didn't know why the Church of England formed, and this all culminated in my explaining to him that Henry VIII wanted to get remarried, the Pope told him no, and the Henry said, essentially, "Screw you, I'm the King of England! I'll start my own church!"

It was a glorious moment. I love being a parent.

Academic endowments in honor of FK characters (humor!)

This wacky train of thought popped up in a conversation about how much money a billion-with-a-b dollars really is.

If you had a huge pile of money that you were to bestow as endowments on academia in honor of FK's characters, how would you distribute it per character?

  • Those I knew immediately, off the top of my head:
    1. anthropology for Nick
    2. biology for Natalie
    3. communications for Lacroix
    4. hospitality management for Janette
    5. botany for Feliks
  • Those I pondered a little:
    1. economics for Schanke
    2. criminology for Tracy
    3. psychology for Urs
    4. history for Vachon
    5. mathematics for Fleur
    6. medicine for Alma
  • Those I pondered more:
    1. sociology for Stonetree
    2. military science for Cohen
    3. philosophy for Reese
    4. nutrition for Screed
    5. business administration for Norma
    6. community studies for Grace
    7. literature for Emily
    8. graphic arts for Marian
    9. women's studies for Sofia & Amalia (different reasons!)
    10. education for Alexandra
    11. theology for Angel
    12. peace and conflict studies for the Inca

Who else? Which other disciplines? ;-D

The Mod Squad has kind of an amazing list of stars-before-they-were-stars
Off the top of my head - Harrison Ford, Martin Sheen, Richard Dreyfuss, Richard Pryor ... it's hilarious.

I am Grateful: 9.15.2017
This is going to be a combination of everything Journal post.

I had a very productive wonderful day. I was able to mail my FINAL payment for taxes. I was able to go to Ikea and get more boxes. Pay some bills, ordered some groceries, register a domain name (YAY!), and now I'm kinda meh.

I am grateful for days off. I can blah, sleep in, or accomplish a great deal.

I am grateful for Ikea. Ikea has some great prices on things.

I am grateful for AWESOME customer service. Blue host is the bomb.

I am grateful for paydays. Ah Paydays, I love you.

Dear Universe, All is well in my world. Live is Good! Thank you Much Love, Krisso.

7 of Pentacles

That fit my day very well. I paid my gas bill, checked last month's electric bill (I paid, this month is A's turn). I ordered some more shake mix. I went to Ikea, had some brunch, bought some boxes and Salmon. I went to the bank and got a money order. I came home and registered a domain name. I'm feeling very well about it.

I paid my taxes off last month, but they refunded the money in error, and I had to call back and figure out what went wrong. Apparently, while the IRS collects penalties for ACA, they do not enforce it, and my total tax bill included my 2014 penalty. I paid off the taxes, but they didn't connect two and two and get four. They mailed my ACA penalty back in error. So that is what I needed to mail today. YAY!

I have to play with with the website more. I have other WP blogs, and this is a little different. It doesn't work quite the same as the other blogs. So, yeah play time. We'll see how it works out.

I have a pretty good idea what I am looking for in a new place. YAY!

I also registered for 2 communitiy ed classes. One for Google Analytics and Photography: As a Business. Legwork can be fun.

This Computer Is Younger Than Previously Thought
I found out what my computer model is. Until now, all I knew (since what was once written was lost to the mists of time, as the sticker wore off at some point) was it was just HP Compaq, since we hadn’t found the old paperwork for it as of yet. So I’m posting this mainly for my own sake, should I lose track of where I made a note of that.

HP Compaq dx2450 Microtower. I went to the support page for HP, and found the method for determining the type a particular model is.

So how did I find out? First, hit the plus sign around the Option 2 section. Their way didn’t work for me, and we never had HP Support Assistant in this computer, for whatever reason even back when it was still XP and would have had those original files. However, figure 1 mentions System Information. Typed in that, and the window that came up had everything, including a section for System Model. And there we have it.

Judging by this press release, it came out around April of 2008, if not earlier. Granted, my model was 32 bit, not the 64 bit they’re announcing. If that’s accurate, that means that the date I previously estimated is off by a few years. Should it make it another few months to 2018 prior to it being replaced, this one’s still going to have made it at least a decade. And should it still survive, we'll have it around as a spare, should its replacement have issues, or should Dad's laptop have problems down the line.

Rosemary and Rue + A Local Habitation - SPOILERS

My rambling spoilery thoughts on the first two books of the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire [twitter.com profile] seananmcguire. On audiobook, narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal [twitter.com profile] MaryRobinette.

Rosemary and Rue )

In regard to the audiobook itself, Mary Robinette Kowal did a great job. I don't think I can imagine Toby as sounding like anyone else, now. Of the other voices she did... I love Tybalt the best.

So I went on to "A Local Habitation". Audiobook again. Chores become so much more pleasant when one is listening to an urban fantasy mystery. Massive SPOILERS for A Local Habitation )

Yes, more audiobooks of this series are on their way to me.

No More HP Printers For Me
Thanks to a firmware update from HP that was pushed yesterday, I believe I can safely cross off HP printers from my list of potential printer purchases.

Basically, the update blocks all non-HP ink from functioning correctly. There weren’t that many from HP that I had included on my list just yet, thanks to everybody's recommendations and advice (thank you for it, by the way) along the lines of Canon, Epson, and Brother.

This merely narrows the field a little more for me.
