Of Sausage Rolls and Devonshire Cream

Sausage Rolls - forgotten favourites, is what they are. They were a staple of the holidays when I was little (my great aunt always had them) and, of course, when we lived in Canada. When we lived in Monterey, there was an elderly couple from the UK in our Scottish Dance group that always had homemade ones at their Xmas party. I haven't had any now in years. I suddenly remembered them last week. So guess what we're having this holiday? I've never made them myself, but they're darn easy from the looks of the recipes I found.

Then there's Devonshire Cream. MMMMM!!! Sometimes you can get little jars of it from England, but not often and it's expensive. I was making something or other earlier in the year with marscapone cheese, and was surprised how much it tasted like it. So we had some in the fridge, and mum made cream scones today, so I gave it a shot. Wasn't too bad at all. Not quite the same, but close enough in a pinch.

As soon as Nin is home from work, we're going to Cracker Barrel with mum and Glenn to get a ham for Xmas dinner and to actually eat dinner. And mum wants to look at the holiday stuff they have in the store. Trying to decide between chicken and dumplings and chicken fried steak.

I had to look up devonshire cream, and then realised it's what I'd call clotted cream! Very tasty and extremely fattening as it's basically 'reduced' cream. Happily enough, my local supermarket stocks it and I tend to use it for summers teas - I can actually make a decent scone :-)

When I lived in Canada clotted cream and Devonshire cream were two different things. Different consistencies. I like 'em both! LOL

Really? That's what I get for taking wiki's word for it! Still love clotted cream, though (yum!)

It really is the same thing. Devon cream tended to be more butter like and clotted cream was wetter. Otherwise, I think it's a where you're from is what you call it thing. and looking up recipes again I remembered we now have a source for unpasteurized milk! Nin's boss! So I can try and finally make the real stuff.

I ate at Cracker Barrell this morning. I love their pecan pancakes and the Old Timers breakfast is very good.

Home made sausage rolls are a specialty of mine! We made them so often when I was a kid in swimming club, I could probably make them in my sleep :D

Also - Chicken fried steak! Only something I could get when in the US.

OH! I love Devonshire Cream. There is one place in town we can usually get it, but it is soooooo expensive. Still, on very special occasions it has to be done. :)
