On to the question! I'll do my best not to be all fangirly on you :) I've been to your website, and you are such an accomplished woman. Actually, I'm rather in awe of you. Seriously [g] Though more in a "she's so cool!" sort of way, than an afraid to talk you way. Heh.
So my question: Cherokee civilization and Tolkien being your two 'specialities'. They seem quite diverse, but I'm wondering if they really are -- is there a connection between the two subjects for you?
And if this is a dopey question, please just tell me, and I'll change it to what's your favourite colour or s

The "big answer" is that I see history (my training) and science fiction/fantasy (my lifelong love) as two sides of the same coin, since they're both trying to get at what it means to be human. One looks backwards, and the other looks forwards, or away altogether, but at heart, they are searching for what is common to humanity across time and space, who we are and what we dream. That appeals to me.
The specific answer, though, is that you cannot consider the Cherokee Nation post-contact, post-Trail of Tears, post-Dawes Act, post-Indian Reorganization Act, (I could keep on going and going here), without a profound sense of displacement. And one of Tolkien's recurring themes, as he wrote in a letter to his son Christopher, is that humanity is "soaked through with a sense of exile." The two are sympathetic to one another, then - they fit. The Cherokee intellectual tradition was one of the first influences for me into thinking, also, that stories need not be factual to be true - in fact, some of the most truthful words are not factual. This freed me to understand the truths that Tolkien and others like him reveal in their work.

You've hit one of the things that so draws me into Tolkien's works. There's a reason I get weepy through most of the end of RotK. Frodo's journey, his suffering, and then his exile in his own home, his own land, is heartbreaking. He doesn't get a fairy tale happy ending. He gives up everything to protect what he loves, but doesn't get to enjoy what he saves.

Well, I don't see them as crazy [g] It's all perfectly logical in my head.(isn't that scary?) Some shows just fit together. Now, the first fanfic I posted was Forever Knight, but Methos and LaCroix were just meant to snark at each other [g] (did you know they actually considered doing a real TV crossover of the two shows once upon a time? Like they used to do on CBS back in the day) Okay, so you put Methos and LaCroix together, and their universes work well together -- I think. But then you have immortal beings, and you want to move a few centuries down the road, and you've just seen First Contact, and you have a fondness for post apocalyptic fic, and there you have Star Trek for a preexisting future history. So that was sort of an accident. We had an IRC conversation one night about what would happen if a Borg tried to assimilate an Immortal [g] Look where that got us!
Man, I had to actually go check my archive to figure that one out.
Here's the order I think it happened.
I came up with the idea for "Demon's Triangle II: Of All Immortals, Dark and Light" first, so the original would have been Highlander/Buffy. But then the story altered when I got into Anita Blake, so I took the time out to write "Demon's Triangle I: To the Power of Three," which includes all three. And while all of this was going on, I was plotting out my Highlander/Poltergeist: the Legacy beast ("Shadows of Forever").
I started working on a short story earlier in the summer that crosses one of my original HL characters with the world of Eric Flint's 1632 universe. I keep writing bits of it in snatches, and it's an interesting concept (20 year old Immortal gets dumped back in time and has to figure out who he knows who's been born yet, where they might be, and whether they'll kill him). Hopefully I'll finish that one soon.
Accckkkk!!! OMG!! Ith, how do I answer that one?! Okay, I cheat. The Lazarus Long/Highlander/Magnum,PI/JAG/NCIS/Star Trek Continuum. Hey, they all flow together so nicely. I'll bet even Stargate and The X-Files would fit in there if I fudged it a bit.
A day off where I didn't have to clean, or cook, or do anything at all.
A fantasy ideal day would be a cabin on the Oregon coast somewhere in the winter, watching a storm roll in while I sit in front of the fire with a book and a glass of wine, relaxing after a day of walking on the beach looking for agates.

What's your image of what you'll be doing, or where you'll be, in ten years?
I've never been to Oregon, but that sounds like a fantastic day - interesting beach, cozy indoors, book, WINE.. Very nice indeed.
Ok, me in 10 years. Right. First off, I hope to be living in New Zealand, preferably in the Marlborough Sounds region but more likely Christchurch or Blenheim, where hubby's family is mostly located.
As for what I'd be doing.. by the time we get to NZ we should have enough cash to buy a decent house outright, or a larger place with a relatively small mortgage (exchange rates are wonderful and my family's company is currently up for sale - unbelievably, I get 10%). This should mean that neither of us has to work full time and can therefore spend more time with the kids that don't exist yet. I don't think I could be a housewife though, much as I like pottering around, so am hoping to buy or start very a small business - exactly what changes on a regular basis, but this week's idea is tours (walking, cycling, motorcycling, minibus..) of wherever we end up. NZ is the size of Great Britain with only 4 million people.. plenty of countryside, and most of it's gorgeous :)

This seems such a silly question compared to many of the others, but it is something I am curious about. Why, in the "oddness meme," did you describe yourself as a spinster instead of just single?
Because spinster is a more accurate description IMHO. Once you pass a certain age and have never been married, and are childless, single doesn't quite cover it. Single seems like it may be temporary, while spinster indicates a more permanent state of affairs. And spinster is a good word in general :)
I don't know. Spinster, to me, is a relic of an age when women were considered wives and home makers, and nothing more, and a woman who reached a certain age without ever being married, and are childless were viewed as failures. I guess in the long and short that is why it puzzled me. The term spnister, again to me, carries connotations of failure, which I do not think you are.
I never meant to imply that being a spinster meant failure. Just that due to usage the word has that connotation. I personally prefer to think of you as a well seasoned bachelorette. And I got by without a question. haha.

I'm going to be boring and old fashioned :) If I ever had a life partner/spouse, whatever you want to call it, no matter who it was, running off with the Doctor wouldn't be a temptation. So I'd politly decline his offer :)
