Dreamwidth?

I've seen it mentioned here and there over the last few weeks. Is this something I should look into? I already have a permanent account on IJ, which I never remember to use, so not sure if I need yet another journal type thingie that will end up being unused and unloved.

Consider logging in using OpenID - it's a free way of having a shufti around without obligation.

I have used my open ID to log in there, but that doesn't give you an account/journal, does it?

No... not a journal. What you get with Open ID is the chance to comment on other people's DW pages, set up a reading circle (i.e. flist) - when and if more people move - and upload 6 icons so that you can comment in style.

Which is what I did tonight. Dreamwidth is actually still in Beta until the end of the month.

Tonight I got the feeling that the house was built, nearly refurbished, the lights are on but there's no one home - yet.

As to what I'll do, well I'll be waiting to see if my fandom jumps before importing entries and setting up a journal. But reading and commenting in the interim, that I can try and do... again, depending on fandom.

Thanks for the info :)

I'll also note that at some point, we want to be able to merge an OpenID account into a full account if somebody has the invite code/gets a paid account.

It gives you a profile and a flist, but yes, not a journal to post to.

Thank you :)

Love your icon BTW!

Some of my flisters have been talking about it, but to be truthful I'd wait and see. Unless all the comms I belong to migrate and my friends disappear, I don't think I'll be joining. I already have an IJ I hardly use and a site on blogspot for work, plus my fic on Archive of our own (http://archiveofourown.org). It's too hard to keep up!

[nods] Yep, I have a website, fic archive, blog, an IJ and LJ and it's just too much sometimes!

Here's a post that might be helpful. It links to a list of features in DW that will be different from LJ and to posts by people who are planning to move.

Very helpful! It actually sounds pretty cool if they manage to pull it all off. I like a lot of the changes they've implemented.

Yeah, it sounds exciting. I'm planning to sign up for an account, although, like [livejournal.com profile] dejla, it'll probably be a while before I move completely.

[identity profile] dejla.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... I'm going to go ahead and sign up. If I can keep track of people there, I'll probably move most stuff over in a year or so.

Since it seems that crossposting should be fairly easy, it might be pretty easy to keep both journals going.

I am now officially intrigued.

This is better than semi-intrigued... If they can do what they say, it might be a good thing, and they do have business backgrounds. It sounds as if they have a sound business plan and good ideas.
