Mo Ryan Responds to Brad Wright

I'm a fan of Maureen Ryan's 'The Watcher', and while I don't always agree with her, I do enjoy reading her thoughts regardless. This her column in response to Brad Wright being unhappy that she doesn't like SGU. While I'm still watching SGU, she makes a lot of points I agree with. Especially after watching the most recent episode, which I found to be majorly squicky. And if they don't deal with those issues, I probably won't be giving it the length of time to grow on me that I did Atlantis. Atlantis took nearly two seasons, and I wanted to give SGU the same shot, but it may be tough to do.

Thanks for linking that article, it was really well written and it just underscores why I'm probably not going to watch SGU.

The producers' "We Can Do No Wrong" attitude isn't helping any either.

I had the same problem with this latest episode - so very creepy. I stopped watching Dollhouse for pretty much this same reason. I don't trust the writers/producers to actually handle it well, so I don't know how much longer I'll be watching it.

Thanks for the link - I've been keeping away from SGU online, and it sounds like that was a smart idea.

THESE PEOPLE ARE ALL MY HEROES. Man, they hit on all my problems so well.

I wish I got the sense that those who who have problems with the show were being truly heard by the "Stargate" writer/producers.

Nope. And they get mocked and called "idiots" in response. Esp. if they're talking to Mallozzi.

I gave up on SGU after the third episode.

Just for my 2 cents' worth: I've never even bothered to watch SGU. Personally, I like my TV shows & movies to be fun, escapist entertainment, not "edgy, gritty" social commentary. Ergo, I liked SG:1 (for the most part), love Farscape and Mythbusters, and enjoy Bones for the interpersonal interactions. I tuned out BSG after the first show because I know there are people in the world who want to wipe out or enslave my society - I am NOT interested in watching the same for entertainment.

I have enjoyed Stargate: Atlantis fanfic a lot though. There are a number of writers who are superb at world-building, exploring cultural possibilities, and making better use of the female characters than the show writers were able to do. If some of my favorite Stargate fanfic authors write SGU stories, I'll probably read them, but that's the closest I'm going to bother coming to the new show. It's also not an encouraging sign when the writers & producers come across as touchy or think-skinned about the show.
