( Charlotte slid off her horse and into his arms. For a moment, he held her there against his bare chest, looking down into her eyes. Then he smiled, still not saying a word, as he dropped his arms, releasing her. She stepped back, holding the gaze, with a smile of her own. )

Too Young For Heaven ~ Part Three

Chris sat under the apple tree in the back garden, wrapped in a blanket, his feet propped up on a box with a cushion. The late afternoon sun had warmed him and he’d drifted to sleep not long after Ezra and Timothy, Charlotte’s oldest boy, had settled him there. This despite the nap Charlotte had insisted he take after he’d sat in the parlour, listening to Penny play the piano for an hour. Now he half dozed, watching Charlotte, who’d come out to join him a short time ago. Her lap was covered in lace, her head bent in deep concentration as she placed fine stitches across the fabric that would be Jemma’s bridal veil. ( Her oldest child’s wedding was in less than two weeks, and every time Charlotte was sitting, she was working on some sort of wedding finery. )

The beginning of this story may be familiar to some of you. I started posting this in 2009, and never finished it. I would add little bits here and there, but never really sat down to finish. Well, this weekend I did. The beginning has been rewritten somewhat, to better fit in with stories written since, so I'm starting fresh. Sorry you had to wait so long for me to complete this, grachonok.

This story has the concept of Highlander Immortality, no Highlander characters appear, but are mentioned. It is set after the flashbacks in my story, I Am Going To the West. New Mexico Territory, Summer, 1867

“If you want me to come, then of course I shall. But I think you overestimate any influence I might have with Chris.”

“Thank you, Charlotte,” Ezra said. After discussing the situation with Vin and Buck, the three men had decided that Charlotte might be able to reach Chris in that dark place he'd fallen into after his grievous encounter with Ella Gaines. And Ezra privately hoped that it might prove to be a much needed distraction for Charlotte, who seemed to be trapped in a darkness of her own.

She nodded. “Let me change and tell Charles and the children I shall be away for the day.”

( Ezra Standish cast a critical eye over his cousin as she threw the last of the feed to the chickens. The morning sun washed over her, giving him a sharp reminder of just how much weight she’d lost in the weeks since Methos had left.  )

Chris pulled her against him, the cool skin of her back pressing into the warmth of his chest. “What is it?” he asked quietly, the dark of the predawn embracing them like a cloak.

( Charlotte leaned back, sighing softly as his arms came around her waist to hold her tight. )

Some friends were trying to cheer me up last night, and one of them said I should write a mystery story called 'Who Stole Vin's Pants?', then another friend chimed in, agreeing, but thinking it should be 'Who Stole Vin and Buck's Pants?'. And damned if I haven't gone and written it. And it isn't a crossover! So this is dedicated to (and blamed on), panthology and layla_aaron. I'm more of an angst girl, and it's been a long time since I've tried my hand at humour, so I hope it will bring a smile to your faces.

( Ezra sank deeper into his chair in front of the jail, the coffee cup at his lips hiding his smile.  )

This story takes place at the end of strangevisitor7's The Tale Is in the Telling, right after Chris leaves the saloon all grumpy. You don’t have to read it for this to make sense, but you should, since it’s an awesome story! When I was reading the first draft of ‘Telling’ I made the offhand comment to Casey that I bet Chris was headed to Charlotte’s for a little comfort and understanding. Well, the road to hell is paved with offhand remarks, and I should know better! Of course, I had to write it.

“Ma’am?” Vin asked quietly at her side.

Glancing up at him, she smiled softly. “I am just taking a moment to appreciate what I have.”( The glow of lamplight spilled through the windows, tingeing the early dusk outside with warmth and welcome. From somewhere inside, she could hear her childrens’ laughter, and she realized how very much she had missed that sound )

The gray light of dawn was slowly seeping across the horizon as Charlotte rode back to the old barn and her final parting with Ben. They had spent several hours the evening before discussing what Ben wanted Charlotte to do for Alice Evans, each avoiding any talk of their lives or their past together. It was time to let it all go, once and for all.

( Arriving at the barn, she found Ben outside, his horse already saddled and ready to go. He helped her dismount, holding her close for just a moment before releasing her and stepping away. )
