Later: DUH!!! the number lock was on - I think the kittens must have triggered it when they leapt on to the netbook last night, because you have to hold down two keys at the opposite end of the keyboard to put it on.

I had that problem with my HP starting shortly after I had to get the motherboard replaced (thanks to a design flaw that caused overheating, which at the time was unacknowledged by HP but I found lots of people complaining of the same problem).

For several months, the keyboard would spontaneously start working correctly after awhile, but eventually it just stayed that way. I had to make do with a wireless keyboard until I got too annoyed with that and the other problems that were developing, and finally broke down and got a macbook instead.

I'm glad it was just the numberlock in this case.

Silly kitties making mischief! :P

Check your number lock? Because I'm looking at it, and the numbers I'm seeing are all the same as the numbers for when number lock is on on my laptop keyboard....

You're BRILLIANT!! [smacks self] I even restarted the computer, so I guess it must hold the setting. I bet the kittens turned it on last night when they leapt on my keyboard.

*blushes* I like pattern-matching, and since all the numbers were replacing letters that I'd type right-handed, I looked at my keyboard. And matched the numbers to their respective letters. I'm glad I could help.

Yay! You have invented a new code! How clever of your kittens!

For a moment I thought you had invented a new language...

Clearly, your kitties are trying to enforce the use of lol-speak on the Internet.

lolol I am always confused when that happens to me, too. Especially because on the laptop, the numbers aren't where I expect numbers to be at all.

I see you let your kittens run your household too *g*
