Later: DUH!!! the number lock was on - I think the kittens must have triggered it when they leapt on to the netbook last night, because you have to hold down two keys at the opposite end of the keyboard to put it on.

I had to make do with a wireless keyboard until I got too annoyed with that and the other problems that were developing, and finally broke down and got a macbook instead.
