One Of My Pet Subjects

I've been reading through a lot of the forum where the two writers of the the POTC movies hang out. The following is a comment by Ted Elliot. It's not a spoiler, though the thread it comes from is. So if you want to read the whole spoilery bit, go here. But the comment/question itself is something I've talked about in the past.

Here's a concept:

Is it possible for a relationship between a man and woman, even a man and a woman who are attracted to each other and have great on-screen chemistry, to have value to each of them and be important to their development as human beings *without* a romantic/sexual component?

Yes!

I now love this man beyond all reason. That is all.

In Pirates the clearest example of this being possible is between Barbossa and Elizabeth.

Very good point! In my last post, I mentioned the journey from the end of 2 to this one, and where they're at that they have the relationship with Barbossa that they do. That they would ask him to marry them. and Barbossa bids farewell to Elizabeth, with "Mrs. Turner".

Yes, and the look he gives her says so much. There are many more awesome examples of that throughout that movie. The first movie as well though. He certainly does his bit for her character arc in that movie.

*Nods.* I haven't seen AWE yet, but my favorite characters in the franchise have been Jack and Elizabeth, and I don't 'ship them.

I'm not a POTC fan, I like the the first film but was in the hospital all last summer so I missed last years

but on another fandom we have in common I saw the relationship between Amanda & methos as such, his comment about her being free to date not withstanding

And I'd amend it to add can a man and a man have chemistry and and have a relationship that's valuable that's not a sexual/romantic one? Again, my reply would be 'yes'.

*Nods.* I don't 'ship Kirk/Spock or Duncan/Methos. I do see those relationships as very important ones to those characters. I just don't see them as romantic/sexual relationships. ;)

I'm kind of amazed we still have to ask this question... but it's still relevent, isn't it! It's a point I want to ask all of the Lee/Kara shippers on BSG>

Can't wait to see the movie.

He was getting much grief from certain shippers on the forum. After you've seen the movie, I'll be more detailed [g]

Lee/Kara -- a fine example of people who should have stuck to comrades and friends!

oh yeah. And the shippers were so put out by Katee Sackoff's recent comments along those lines...
