Okay, Now That's Done

So let me ask my question of the day: am I the only American who doesn't give a toss about David Beckham and his wife? Because judging by the news coverage they're getting on their arrival here, I feel like I must be.

I have an awareness of who they are, but geez! I can't understand why I need to see them plastered all over my TV. Not to mention the idea that somehow this guy is going to singlehandedly create hordes of American soccer fans just seems very far fetched. I certainly have no sudden burst of desire to suddenly start watching soccer games. But again, maybe it's just me. It very frequently is [g]

(bet you never thought you'd ever read a post about soccer on my LJ!) (chalk it up to Friday the 13th)

Later: deciding that maybe I don't get the subtle sports nuances because I'm a girl, I have polled my male coworkers. Sorry, David, but they don't care either.

No. You are not.

*raises hand* I don't give a whip about David Beckham and his wife, What's-er-Name. Apparently the media thinks we should, though... but it falls on deaf ears here.

Nice icon.

*raises hand* Me! Me! I don't care at all. You and I are definitely on the same page. :)

I'm sorry what are we talking about again?

Oh...that...yeah...um..k. bye.

[identity profile] darya01.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*cackles* Have fun with them *lol* Becks goes USA...and it's all over the news here, too! But maybe we'll be delivered from them once they're settled ;-P

Now...next step: how to ban P. Hilton from screens and magazines?

[identity profile] kimuro.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Puh-lease! Someone has requested a ban on all P. Hilton related non-news items and I, for one, am in complete support of the notion. I mean, when you get down to it, what has she done to be famous for anyway? Except be famous, that is.

A great empty noise.

[identity profile] darya01.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
*lol* Amen to that! The only 'talent' I see is holding her cell phone anytime and anywhere...no matter in which situation *snorts*

Well, I'm an American and I have no idea who David Beckham is, so there's at least one more of us. You refer to soccer in your post so I presume he's a soccer player, and I have zero interest in sports; I only even hear of athletes if they get arrested. Did he get arrested?

Did he get arrested?

Not yet! [snorfle]

Yes, he's a hugely famous soccer player in Europe from the UK, and he's married to a Spice Girl. And that's the limit of my knowledge.

Ah. Contemporary music: another thing I am perenially ignorant about. My ex once laughed at me because I had heard a Jethro Tull song I liked and looked for the CD under "T", not knowing it was a band, not a guy.

[snicker] Until this moment, I thought it was a 'he' too!

[identity profile] fides.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair he is also a he - but then he is famous for inventing the seed drill and not for being a rock-combo :-)

Well, I *was* just going to say, "Who is he?" but I read the comments first, so now I not only know who he is but also why I do not care. 8-)

is that icon Duncan MacLeod in a dress?

*raises hand*

Not giving a damn down here in Florida, nor is the rest of the family.

I don't give a toss about either and I have no clue what th big deal is at all.. so I am standing with you asking... WHY???

[identity profile] 1-mad-squirrel.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about David Beckham. I especially don't care about his wife. I don't care about sports in general, apart from a mild interest in Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, especially it's 2001 World Series winning team.

Not that I would mind seeing soccer become a more widely watched major league sport. Anything to give American football a run for its money.

CNN though, somebody they were interviewing was talking about Beckham being a draw for parents to bring their soccer-playing kids to the games. I don't know about in L.A., but in D.C. it's too dangerous. One of my nephews was invited to a DC United game by a friend's family, and my sister and her husband wouldn't let him go. The Latin American fans who go behave too badly for it to be safe for children. I'm not surprised, I've heard stories of soccer fans at games in South America throwing glass bottles of urine at the opposing side's fans.

Actually, I would like to get interested in soccer. Lovely fit young men in shorts usually with great legs ... what's not to love. But ...
I want to watch Scottish soccer matches. I need background colour for my story. He's a Rangers fan, she's Celtic and I don't know anything about either of them except the name.

Yet another in the Don't Care bin. I think the last sports guy I was interested in was Bjorn Borg when I was 15.

[identity profile] mischief5.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I was having a nap. I thought David Abromawitz already lived in the U.S. You know, the Highlander writer we met in Memphis? Nice guy.

[identity profile] dracschick.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. I don't care either.

[identity profile] adabsolutely.livejournal.com 2007-07-14 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think you have a consensus.
