Anyone out there want to explain to me what exactly it is? I mean, how it it different from AIM or other such chat programs? I'm not ashamed to admit I just don't get it [g]
It's not so much a chat program as a mini-blog. You can post tiny entries, a few lines long. Quick little updates. It's not really chatting because you aren't conversing with someone the same as you would over AIM or gtalk. You can direct posts at a specific person but it's not a private conversation.
I used it when I was in a class on using online tech for school media centers. I don't use it much anymore since the only people I was following at the time were my classmates.
It's useful if you are travelling and don't have time for a proper post to let people know how you are doing in a sentance. Its good as if you want to you can receive peoples twitters to your mobile (you can choose whom and switch them on and off at will)

I have a friend on my other LJ who somehow saves her twitter entries over the course of a day and has them posted on her LJ once a day.
