I don't think that's really necessary. They do make some throw-away mention of things that happened in the first movie (what comes to mind is the fact that Hellboy got his rival for Liz's affections stationed in Alaska) and things that are important are given some air time.
I liked the elves a LOT. They were not Tolkien elves and they weren't universally benevolent or wise. Although ... one or two acted as if they thought they were. Just like any other kind of nobility.
