Let Them Eat Cake

Pillaged from [livejournal.com profile] mosellegreen

Have You Ever Baked A Cake Beside A Mass Grave?

A wonderful way to while away the hours. See what happens when one unsuspecting soul asks what cake topping is called in the UK.

Dude. There should really be a mechanism for people with THAT much time on their hands to donate some to the rest of us.

It seems to me that they need to explain what "cake" means to the British too. I'm getting the feeling they mean little hand-hand held things.

Yeah, some people were specifying "sponge cake," but it wasn't necessarily pointed out as a referential difference.

My grandparents were from England, and at least for me growing up, 'cakes' meant smallish handheld things you'd eat with tea, and 'a cake' meant the big thing you cut into pieces with knife and eat with a fork. [g]

Our biscuits are certainly quite different :)

It's not a debate, it's a tax issue!

Oh.My.Lord!! See? Just proves my theory that anything involving beaurocracy is a Monty Python sketch.

Oh, and... MMMMMMMM! Jaffa Cakes!!

When you say "cake" to an American we generally think round or sheet cake that is cut into pieces and served to a number of people. The icing is often, but not always, soft, and the cake is eaten with a fork.

BTW: whether a person says "icing" or "frosting" in America is a regionalism. I can't remember which is from where, but it came up in a meme quiz a while back.

*jaw drops*

I recognise some of those people from other lists. On a normal day, they appear sane, but add a little sugar and water..

*head!desk*

It's a friggin' CAKE! With something sugary on top! Who CARES?!?!

I think my favourite part was bringing up rationing and the war. Reminded me of the Fawlty Towers ep where John Cleese's character kept mentioning WWII to some German guests after a head injury [g]

OMG WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA!!!

I have a recipe for chicken that's rolled in crushed up Captain Crunch and then baked. I think it was a Planet Hollywood recipe.

"In the end I went for two batches of a very very excellent chocolate cake recipe split over a spring form tin, a big pudding basin and a small pudding basin. Each was split in two and filled with whipped ganache, then the layers were put together with more whipped ganache, then it was all smothered in the stuff. Then I surrounded and covered the cake in praline puffs (choux filled with a combination of cream and nutella, covered in chocolate) then covered that lot with liquid ganache, chocolate, marshmallows, giant buttons, white buttons, a bunch of cream eggs plopped on for good measure, some curlie wurlies sticking out, and drizzled with copious more chocolate and white chocolate. Then a big Barbie and Thomas chocolate lolly as the bride and groom."

AKA very very very naughty :)
