I've always joked that my personality in part is due to reading Jane Eyre for the first time when I was seven. Just finished watching the newest rendition on Masterpiece Theater, and am thinking maybe that's not quite as much a joke as I thought it was :)
Maybe if I'd read Austen instead of Bronte, I'd have a cheerier outlook on life!
Definitely recommend the new miniseries. Very good, though stuffed into four hours, it's a little sparse in some parts.

However, the first Austen I ever read was Mansfield Park with the most insipid heroine ever, and after that I developed an unfair dislike for Austen. I really ought to give her another shot and re-read Pride and Prejudice.

The other books I read as a youngster were Daphne DuMaurier's -- Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, etc.

But I wanted to kill Jane's awful cousins and aunt more times than I can count. You know, where you lay awake at night and think up different ways for them to die? Preferably messy, unpleasant, and long.
And I'd like to see Peter do both Mr. Rochester AND Sherlock Holmes.
