Stupidist Curse Ever

Yes. I realize I ranted about this ten + years ago, but it deserves a retrospective. We're rewatching Buffy, and we're at the end of S2. Now, I adore the angst and the tragedy, but that being said, the curse is idiotic, and no amount of reveiwing the series has changed my mind. Angel had nothing to do with what Angelus did when the demon took over his body - Liam/Angel was not in residence as it were. So they bring back Liam's soul, moment of happiness, yada yada. YERGH!! It drives me nuts, I must rant. Okay, I feel better. Not really, but you know :)

And (ten+ years so I could be misremembering) didn't the gypsies in question wind up basically enslaving their descendants to the maintenance of the curse? I thought that's why Jenny Calendar was there.

It is quite an obvious Macguffin by Joss standards, it's never made much sense to me either since the curse was punishing Angelus and to remove his soul is an end to said punishment. Meh.

I never minded it, but it never made sense that they kept mentioning that he could never be with a woman because that would trigger the curse. Faith even tried to turn him by offering him sex. And the entire idea was supposed to be that making love to Buffy is what brought him a moment of true happiness, not just having sex. But they seemed to get stuck on that idea and it carried over into the Angel series.

That was my other peeve. It wasn't about the sex itself, it was love/sex/belonging/true love combo. He could have had sex with Faith till the cows came home and never had a chance of losing his soul.

So your idea was... correct me if I'm wrong here, you want to make the boy suffer, so you gave him a soul, but the moment he *deals* with his shit, the moment he's at peace and perfectly happy - YOUR PSYCHOTIC MURDERER *COMES BACK* AND MURDERS PEOPLE EN MASSE!?!?!???!?!!!? It is, indeed, completely nonsensical and unjust.

However, it's still orders of magnitude less stupid than one that renders the condemned nigh-omnipotent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120616/). :-D
