As far as what Methos was doing when he came to the dojo- it was always my impression that he was fixing to get the hell out of dodge and he was coming to give Duncan some bull-shit excuse about why he was leaving town. He wasn't there to tell him about Kronos because when Duncan asks if he knows an Immortal named Kronos, he looks gut-punched.
As for the baggy sweater - Peter has talked about this in interviews. He purposely kept wearing the sweater and kept letting it get more and more stretched. He said he liked the way the sleeves stretched over his hands and it gave the impression of a straight jacket. And that's what he felt - that Methos was losing it - that he was getting more and more out of control and was just getting by from moment to moment.
