ithildin: (Torchwood - Jack Sepia)
I was leaving a comment elsewhere, and it reminded me I'd never actually posted about this here as I'd intended back when the last ep of TW aired.

Torchwood is the 21st century version of Blake's 7.

As I was watching the series ender, it occurred to me that TW is a lot like B7. No one, not even the star, is safe. Anyone can die, and they do -- frequently. And there's an underlying thread of hopelessness from beginning to end. As traumatic as the last episode of TW was, it wasn't any Gauda Prime. They need to work a little harder at reaching that particular level of angst, betrayal and blood shed. But they're off to a good start.

Maybe that's why I didn't feel betrayed by the PTBs of TW. I've been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Well, okay, I never did buy the "I went to Gauda Prime and all I got was this bloody t-shirt" shirt, complete with bullet holes [g] But you get the idea! I really regret not buying that shirt....

Well they did have Gareth Thomas as a guest star... : )
*ponders more, tries not to imagine the TW cast in B7 costumes (especially any of Avon's *g*)*
Hee - but yes, I can see your angle. Can you imagine the fan uproar if RTD pulled a Gauda Prime? Meep.

Wouldn't that be something? [g]

As pretty as Jack is, he doesn't hold a candle to Avon. Ah, that voice!!

I don't remember Blake's 7 very well at all, but hubby does. I should look for re-runs, one day.

Hmm. Have you ever met [livejournal.com profile] watervole on your travels? Bet she's got that t-shirt *g* There's even an annual [water pistol] shoot-out down our way (http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7/Shop/Shop.cgi?L=../Quarries/Winspit/index.html&I=UP1)!

It is on my list of five most fave shows ever!

Never have met her [g] I may not have that shirt, but I did get the 'So Many Doctors, So Little Time" shirt.

Bleck. If it's B7, I should definitely stop watching right now. I've never watched any B7. Never wanted to. It's enough to have heard how it all ends. I enjoyed the first season of TW. I didn't mind second season up to "Reset" but my interested started declining there, and has pretty thoroughly crashed with "Exit Wounds." I'm not sure if I'm interested in watching the series without Owen, and I'm positive I have no interest in watching it without Jack. :(

You aren't the only fan of the series on my flist, but I've never had any doubt that it wasn't my cup of tea. I mean the only reason I watched the third season of Forever Knight was that I liked Vachon, and I do my best to forget how it all ended. As much as I disliked "Reset" I was prepared to give TW the rest of the season to make me feel like I wasn't wasting my time sticking with the series. "Exit Wounds" has me seriously wondering if I have been wasting my time. :-\

Hahahaha
Exit Wounds was rather painful, but it wasn't nearly as painful as what happened on Gauda Prime. Really, Jack would have to kill Ianto for TW to have that kind of angst!

B7 for me, is the benchmark for all angst TV [g]

Hey, there's still another season to come!

Hey, there's still another season to come!

If they make it kid friendly, and Jack light the way some of the rumors say they're planning it'll be easier to ignore. No Owen, little Jack, and entirely kid friendly. :-/

Heh, the way the rumors have Martha joining the cast full time, and the core cast becoming Martha, Gwen, and Ianto it'll more likely be Gwen or Martha and at that point it'll be sort of Sarah Jane redux. I knew I wasn't going to like things when they talked about making "adjustments" after first season. I just didn't realize how much. *Shakes head.*

No, Blake's 7 is a 'prequel' for Firefly [LOL].

If Torchwood is a modern version of a 70's programme, it's closer to 'Doomwatch'. IMO, of course.
