Date: 2008-06-14 01:55 am (UTC)From:steampunk is "new" and not new...the shortest way to answer is think Jules Verne/HG Wells/Dr. Who/retro-future with an emphasis on Victorian cultural ideals with an eye towards science as it was when steam was a mode of power, coupled with a punk attitude of DIY and independence. And thats the best I can come up with off the top of my head. Trouble is, there is no real definition of steampunk as there are lots of things that could be called steampunk, but its not necessarily set in stone. All I can say from what Ive observed is DIY, cogs and wheels, steam power, dirigibles, and mad science that is optimistic and 'can-do' in nature. And steampunks seek to individualize and beautify items that are mass-produced and without much character or soul. A good example of this is one steampunk who built a casing for his computer and keyboard that looks more like it came from 100-150 years ago.
