ithildin: (Media - Empire)
A few mornings ago, we were listening to the entertainment report on the morning radio show, and the DJ was talking about how a remake of Karate Kid is coming out, along with a Three Stooges remake. So that got me and [livejournal.com profile] ninjababe talking about remakes in general. And then it occurred to me: what if Darth Lucas decided to remake Star Wars?!?!? After all, it has been decades, and he's always messing with the originals, and generally making a lot of his fans tear their hair out crazy. It would be so him to do a total remake of his own movies. And he'd probably cast the Jonas Brothers as the male leads, and Paris Hilton as Leia, and Chewbacca would be replaced by Jar Jar. I joke, well, only a little really. Or he'd do away with actors entirely and make it all CGI AND 3D - after all, I recall an interview from many years ago where that was basically his dream, of being able to make movies without people in them. This could be his time.

The thought has haunted me ever since. And now, I share it with you! Aren't I a sweetheart?

Oh yes, you are!
But there is one thing Darth Lucas can't do - he can't ruin all old copies of original SW! So now, when we are warned, we just have to secure our stash!:)

This just goes to prove that there are no new ideas in Hollywood anymore.

Wow. Did you sneak a peek at Lucas' diary or something? A New Hope Redux is due out in March 2012. Trufax.

I think the onslaught of remakes are a sure sign of the oncoming apocalypse. Next thing you know they'll be re-making or re-booting Tron... oh, wait.

Well, isn't TRON II more of a sequel though? Or at least that was what I thought I'd read.

LOL

Depends who you ask. Officially, yes, but also no. That's why it's Tron Legacy rather than Tron II; it isn't a straight remake or reboot, but it has enough elements of the original that it's not strictly a sequel either. Whatever it is... LIGHT CYCLES!!!!! *g*

Ok

You just had to share the horror, is that it? Because you know the prequels didn't traumatize us enough. :(

that was basically his dream, of being able to make movies without people in them.

And thanks to Avatar, this is actually possible now.

But Avatar does have people in it. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana acted their a**es off for it. The cameras were there to capture all the nuances of their performances. All the humans in the movie were real, not CGI. There are some really great docus on YouTube showing the process, with side by side comparison of the filming and end product. This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ1JzYPjcj0), for example.

I'm not saying Avatar didn't have actors, or that the actors didn't act. I'm saying that the technology that came out of Avatar has made it so that you don't necessarily need actors. Once you have the basic structure and movements mapped, then you could conceivably make a movie without having to pay any actors to star in it. Example: James Cameron could make 'Adventures in Pandora' with the exact same characters, but without having to use the actors. (Granted, it wouldn't be anywhere near the same as what Avatar showed, but then a lot of movies aren't so concerned with decent performances from their stars, or even writing.)

This is technology that has actors in Hollywood worried, because right now SAG has no rules about attaching rights to the actors identities, leaving the field open for exploitation of the actors in just this manner.

You are not a sweetheart :D I do not want to even think about this.

On a related note - the LG is dying to see the KK remake. He's never seen the original and loves Jackie Chan who is, god help us, doing the Mister Miagui (That's spelt wrong) role.

Don't want to scare you, but I think I saw something in an email promo thing about him doing a Star Wars comedy with Seth Green I think? Here are some links... if you dare click.

They've also apparently re-made A Nightmare on Elm Street. That will be an epic fail, no doubt.

YES I heard about remake of Three Stooges. They ought to hire Gibson to direct it as he is infatuated by them. I heard some of Rigg's behavior in Lethal Weapon was because Gibson loves them so much.
I cannot believe what has happened to Hollywood. Have they no creative writers any longer?? What happened to original scripts and
something worthwhile watching?
I no longer go to films. I just decide from trailers what I want to see and get it on DVD through the three county library systems which I utilize. If none of them carry a film, which is unusual, I ask my local branch here in Washington Co. to query the 'inter-library loan' program which is a nationwide library system to see if any library in US has a copy.
I did that when I wanted to see Family Album. A copy came from Nebraska and it was in my hand in a week.
