I love this show. We meet Darius who I adore. Grayson is a fantastic bad guy. And we see some of the first clues about Duncan and how he feels about older immortals. When he goes to the cabin with Richie to train - we realize that he is really concerned that he might not be able to take Grayson. And he tells Richie that Grayson is a couple of thousand years old (I believe I'm remembering that right) and therefore, just by age itself, the man has incredible power and ability. Which gives you a hint of how Duncan feels and thinks when he meets - *ta da* "the world's oldest man" - a man who is three thousand years older than Grayson.

Duncan must have been about to shit his britches. Either that or have an orgasm just from the sheer excitement of meeting someone that old.

Oh well, back to the first season now....

Anyway, I think Grayson made a great bad guy. And I loved how Tessa stood up to him. And Duncan made her go to Darius for safety so he wouldn't have to worry about her or Richie in his fight with Grayson. Though, I've always wondered if he also didn't want Tessa around to see him (Duncan) lose his head and he really wasn't sure how this one was going to go.

And the fight and quickening was some of the best work of the series. *laughs* Reminds me of our tour boat ride in Vancouver. The Guide was talking and pointing out all these sites and 50 women ran over to the other side of the boat and began snapping pictures of the sulfer piles. Our waitress shook her head and said, "your groups sure has a thing for sulfer."

Grayson was born in 325 CE, according to the Watcher CD/DVD notes, so he's not as old as Darius.

This is one of the strongest episodes of the first season, and heralds the best of future episodes, laying the groundwork for such key characters as Methos and Kronos. A lot of the strength of the episode lies in the multi-layered portrayal of the villain--Grayson just demanded the viewer's attention. He was so strong that there was a true feeling of jeopardy for the hero. The watcher becomes really invested in the outcome.

The setting for the final duel on the sulfur docks was brilliant. Grayson and MacLeod were so well matched, it was almost a pity that Grayson lost his head *g*.

Darius is one of my favorite secondary characters, obviously. For all his saintliness, he's a manipulative SOB when it comes to Duncan and his pupils, and makes such a lovely counterpart to Methos. Darius/Methos is almost my OTP.

There are huge, gaping plot-holes in this episode, but I love it anyway. The runes were a dim-witted and inaccurate device, though they effectively captured Duncan's fancy. It's not credible that Grayson would have waited so long to exact his revenge, particularly if Darius were wandering beyond Holy Ground during the Napoleonic wars.

Tessa was wonderful and Richie bearable and the climactic fight was grand.
