She's home, they ruled out a heart attack, but they don't know what actually is wrong, so she has to go back to her doctor tomorrow so he can run more tests. I made her a poached egg and now she's sleeping. Mum's 75, and I know I need to get used to this, but I'm not doing so well in that department. When the red light and warning noises kept going off on the monitor thingie last night in the ER it was pretty scary.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Very much appreciated.

Glad it wasn't a heart attack, that much at least is a relief.

As for the monitors and things that go 'ping' they will alarm and flash red at the least little thing, even if you're having a drink or something stupid like that - as I'm sure you noticed.

Eek! You know, it's the uncertainty that kills me with these things more than anything. At least when you KNOW what's wrong, you can move forward and deal with it and either fix it or get ready.

Its great that she's home, but isn't it rather late in the pollen season to COPD/Costochondritis thing kick in?

My wife grew up with a pair of multi-packs-a-day smokers and has a good case of COPD.

A couple years ago, she let a case of bronchitis get out of hand and we got to visit the ER. Before they got her the nebulizer, the Blood Gas/O2 alarm kept going off because she wasn't breathing that well. Not fun to experience.

I hope they figure out whatever is wrong with your Mum and she gets better. As it is, I assume your Father isn't too pleased with this either and is being a handful.

It doesn't exactly get 'easier' as such, hon, but you get a little more prepared for the next minor thing. And the ER is notoriously not a great place to get used to anything, because something's always happening.

sorry I didn't get a chance to read journals yesterday so I'm just reading about this now. I'm glad it wasn't a heart attack and that she got to come home and I hope that when they figure out what the problem is it isn't serious. I'm really sorry about your having to deal with it too, I mean I'm only 26 and my parents are 66 and 56 so they're still pretty healthy, except for my great grand ma nobody I know has passed, and while I was sad I wasn't emotional at all, maybe just because I wasn't particularly close to her, I'm not sure. So I cannot imagine how hard it must be to have to come to terms with loved ones becoming older and eventually passing. Anyway, I hope that things with you and your mother end up well.

ERs & ICUs are definitely rattling. I wish medical machine makers would think of the patients & change some of the mechanics so that indicators of good stuff sounded pleasant. Or maybe they'd add in a window that would light up with "Do Not Panic" in large, friendly letters when whatever was being measured was normal!

I'm right there with you: Facing our parents' mortality sucks! My dad's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and it's hard when I think about how my kids won't have him in 10-15 years.
