Geez, Spoilers!

I had to stop watching a comm I belong to, because yet again, full out spoiler posts with no cuts for stuff I haven't seen yet [sigh] It's not like it's weeks ago, but within days, hours even. Ah well, that's the internet. I should have made checked before joining the comm to see what the spoiler rules were before I joined, so it's more my fault than anyone else.

Not feeling well today, so heading into work late. Best get to it.

Spoiler protection is just one of those internet courtesy things that I've had beaten in to me over the years that I assume it's the rule, but I forget about the rare exceptions.

But that's the thing... when does a piece of information no longer become a spoiler? Everyone has different ideas, so there can't really be a norm. There has to be someone, somewhere, who hasn't seen something, even if it originally aired 5 years ago. So then do you put everything under a spoiler cut? I don't think there is one right answer.

As I said in another comment, I've had people upset with me for something that had aired a year prior, but in their country, they hadn't seen it yet. So I try to be mindful of that fact now. Me personally, I use spoiler cuts for, I don't know, a couple years probably. Till it gets round the world. It's easy enough to have a cut, and that way I don't inadvertently ruin it for someone. For my email lists and comms, it's usually a minimum 24 hours. Enough time for those without 9-5 jobs to view and/or download. I think I'm at the short end of the spectrum. I know there are Doctor Who comms I've been on where the entire season is under spoiler protection.

Anyway, I just need to pay more attention to comms I join when it comes to spoilers. Especially these days when it can be days before I see an episode. Or months. I don't even read the House email list I own anymore since I haven't seen the last six episodes. Somehow, I've managed to remain fairly unspoiled. Which is surprising.

Spoilers are a tough. it is hard to determine when it's safe to discuss openly but typically you should put episode discussions under a cut because many people don't watch the episode the day it airs.

For new stuff I think at least a week is a fair amount of time to put stuff under a cut JIC. And if it's surprising stuff (real plot twisters) I don't think the spoiler courtesy under a cut ever goes away

I guess I've just never given it much thought because no one has complained before, and for the most part, it doesn't bother me. Especially with a gem of a show like Make It or Break. :P I'll make a new rule, I just need to figure out what the best time period is.

It's always good to have guidelines! It's always better to be overly cautious.

When I first started watching Highlander a few years back I had no idea Richie died in season 5 - I did feel spoiled about that but it was almost 10 years after the fact so I really can't blame anyone for assuming I knew. That's why I'm super cautious about spoiling others.

I don't know what I'm going to do when they start filming STXII. I KNOW there will be spoilers all over the place, and I DON'T WANT TO KNOW before I see it.

It's hard with movies since there's so much more media attention. You can get spoiled in most unlikely places.

Thanks. I'm not rabidly spoilerphobic, but usually expect at least 24 hours to pass. Heck, I got yelled at once for making a vague reference to something that had happened in a show a year before, so I'm not that bad [g]

Yeah. With XI I wasn't watching TV, nor paying attention to any place on the net where I might have seen spoilers.

I will have to be very, very careful to avoid XII.

I bought a magazine for the Serenity movie several months before it came out, and would you believe, one of the actor interviews, they spilled the beans about a major event near the end of the movie. Nin said she'd kill me if I spoiled her so I had to be really careful not to even talk about the movie in case I let it slip. I couldn't wait for it to be released to end my torture :)

I had managed to avoid knowing anything about 'Return of the Jedi' before it came out. So, of course, the day of the premier there are tons of reviews -- everywhere! Newspaper, TV, even on the damn radio!

I had to threaten coworkers not to talk about it around me. I couldn't wait to get to the theater that day.
