I Love This Sort Of Thing

A dialect survey for California. The ones I don't pronounce the same, or call something different, are the British Columbia influence in my speech pattern.

Quite a few gave me a laugh, especially this one:

118. What do you call a drive-through liquor store?
a. brew thru (0.42%)
b. party barn (0.26%)
c. bootlegger (0.10%)
d. beer barn (1.20%)
e. beverage barn (0.42%)
f. we have these in my area, but we have no special term for them (16.61%)
g. I have never heard of such a thing (67.57%)
h. other (13.42%)

There are other states surveyed, but haven't looked at them yet.

Where I come from, drive-through liquor stores are called "beer barns", so I had to laugh at seeing the clear cut difference. Really interesting link! I love looking at dialectal differences in the English language.

When I lived in Missouri, I never saw the drive-thru liquor stores, but they had them in Illinois, where I grew up (but don't recall seeing them in the Chicago area). Now that I live in Ohio, they're everywhere! I think they're just called drive-thrus, but I'm not sure.

It's kinda like what you call a frying pan....skillet...etc.

ok being from pennsylvania, the concept of a drive through liquor store is a little beyond me. I have trouble finding a regular liquor store that's open on sundays!

I've lived in CA all my life and I don't think I've ever seen one. I was under the impression they were illegal but I have nothing to back that up.
