Just finished reading Shonda's thoughts over at Grey's Writers, and this bit stands out:

"The flashbacks were something I’d been wanting to do for a while. I really felt that we needed to see Addison and Derek and the moments after he discovers her in bed with his best friend Mark. Because what Addison did to Derek is SO much worse than what happened between Meredith and Derek in that exam room at the end of the season. I wanted us to remember that she betrayed him long before he betrayed her. And that Addison herself is suffering over her choice to have an affair."

I don't know if I can agree with that. I think in both cases, it was awful. What Derek did was just as bad, maybe for different reasons, but bad. He's looked his wife in the eye and sworn to her on more than one occassion that he wants to married to her, that he and Mer are just friends, etc, etc. So he's been lying for months. Leading her on. And as recently as that morning. And I can't help but think, what if it had been Addison who went to find Meredith instead of Calli?

So now? Maybe they're even when it comes to betrayal, but that's about it. I can't justify what Derek did just because Addison cheated first, so that somehow gives him the moral high ground.

This requires me finishing the fic I started after the S2 ender. Seriously.

i don't agree either. from the flashback i get the impression that Addison cheating on Derrick was spontaneous thing. but what Derrick did was worse because he pursued Meredith and I think that he didn't even think about Addison afterwards or felt guilt for cheating on his wife.
