Been meaning to ask thoughts on this term. I see it used a lot, and I sort of get it, but I don't [g] So what does the term 'fandom boyfriend' mean to you? Is it your favourite character? The one, if he were real, you'd want as a boyfriend? Or the one who'd want to be your boyfriend? Or is it more along the lines of a friend who's a boy? None of the above?
Silly question, but I realize I'm not really sure what it's supposed to mean :)

Date: 2011-12-30 01:50 am (UTC)From:So, while I watch SPN and enjoy it, neither Dean or Sam is my fandom boyfriend. I don't follow their careers and don't particularly join in the fandom or read SPN fanfiction to get more of Sam and Dean. (Even though I did do a HL/SPN crossover this year for Shortcuts, it wasn't because of a SPN fandom boyfriend. I just thought it would be cool to mix the two shows).
I love WC and adore both Peter and Neal, neither are my fandom boyfriend. I don't think about them in fandom terms, I just love the show.
I love H50, but not to watch Steve or Danny. I love the show and the interaction between Steve and Danny (and the rest of the team) and I want to keep up with the episodes. But I'm not knee deep in the fandom and don't follow the boys careers although I did love Alex in Moonlight. But I didn't watch H50 because Alex was in it. Only because it looked like a fun and interesting show and it hasn't let me down. I can totally see the bromance between the two male characters though, but don't watch the show because of it.
But Methos is my fandom boyfriend. As is Duncan. I adore Peter and Adrian and enjoy following their careers, but don't think about them in terms of expanding their roles in my life. But I do enjoy expanding Duncan and Methos' roles and love reading additional stories. I don't think about them with me, but each other. Yet, they hold an important place in my life through their universe.
I said recently that Sherlock Holmes was my new fandom boyfriend. Mostly because I'm really enjoying the episodes and really want to see the next one. He might not remain my fandom boyfriend for a long period if the shows and fandom fizzles. But right now I want more Sherlock!
I also said Gwaine (from Merlin) was my new fandom boyfriend. Because I thought he was so hot I bought all 3 seasons of Merlin and want to see all the Merlin vids with Gwaine in them. I don't think of him in terms of someone who I want want as a boyfriend, but think of him as someone I would watch this show just to see. I think he makes it more interesting and the episodes he is in are fun to watch.
I don't know if any of that makes sense, of course.

Date: 2011-12-30 01:59 am (UTC)From:Well, I decided to go with the first commenter, since I had a meme to post. I don't connect the actors with the characters in these sorts of things, so I didn't account for whether I'd want to follow the actors careers or not. And I'm not really involved in any fandoms currently, not like I used to be at any rate, so that wasn't really a factor either.
And now, I don't think I understand the term anymore than I did to start! [g]

Date: 2011-12-30 02:07 am (UTC)From:Patty loves Scott Cain. She loves Danny. She thinks about him to the point that she spends time reading Danny and Steve fanfiction because she wants more Danny than she gets with the show. She has looked up everything Scott has played in and bought as many things she can. She bought (or I did as a present) the book of photographs Scott published.
Now, she doesn't wish Danny or Scott was her real boyfriend. She has a husband she loves and is happy with. But this guy has her attention. She thinks about him. She spends money and time to get more of him in her life. He's her fandom boyfriend.
I have a wall with Duncan and Methos' (as well as Adrian and Peter) pictures dedicated to them. I have spent money going to conventions related to them and their show/characters. I have spent time and money thinking about and expanding their place in my life. Now, I don't wish either Adrian or Peter, or Duncan and Methos were my real life boyfriends. But due to the amount of time, effort and money I have spent expanding their role in my fandom life, they are my fandom boyfriends.
