I think I give up. The show just doesn't grab me, and I'm like the only person in the world who feels that way, but I live to be different, I guess :) I am a fandom failure. Too bad to, as I believe it's colouring my feelings for The Hobbit, which is not a good thing. I'm wondering if my mum would like it though. She's an actual old school Holmes fan. May have to get her the DVDs if I see them on sale.

Don't feel bad. I'm probably the only person in the world who doesn't want anything to do with Dr. Who. I tried to watch it and wanted to like it, but just isn't going to happen.

You aren't the only person on my flist who doesn't 'do' BBC Sherlock - and Pat isn't the only one who doesn't like Dr Who either. I squeak madly about both, but then it takes all types.

No-one on my flist has ever admitted to not liking Firefly AFAIK...

[Grins] I love Sherlock, but I know what you're going through. For instance, I could never see what others saw in Hawaii 50, it just leaves me cold!

And hey, have you seen my fic writing choices of late? I couldn't get more obscure if I tried (and thanks to my crossover meme, that situation isn't going to change any time soon :-P)

I think everyone has something popular they just don't connect with, for various reasons. I didn't start to enjoy Sherlock until this past series. Mostly because I finally admitted I was never going to love Freeman's Watson as much as I've loved various other Watsons. Sherlock is the more engaging character, which is odd since you're supposed to engage with Watson as he's the narrator.

I didn't fully click with the BBC show until the second series. For me it was a combination of accepting my not loving Freeman's Watson that much, and of Cumberbatch's Sherlock growing on me. I'm quite mad about him having finished the second season.

I could always see how Sherlock could appeal more to some people. I mean Watson was supposed to be the everyman. Sherlock was supposed to be the ideal. I may generally prefer Watson, but realizing one of the reasons I like Benny's is how he gets across the logic vs. emotion conflict I've always loved in Spock, I really love Benny's Sherlock.

You're not the only one. I think the scripts are just too cool for school. (That is not a compliment) From the pictures I've seen though, Freeman makes a great Bilbo.

That is sad. Martin Freeman hasn't engaged me as Watson, but I love him in Love Actually and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think he'll make a fine Bilbo. I admit I haven't seen Benedict Cumberbatch in anything else to judge what kind of Smaug he might be by something else, but for Smaug it'll just be his voice. Won't have to look at him or his physical mannerisms.

She might enjoy it. While I love Jude Law's Watson almost as much as Edward Hardwicke's and I love Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock almost as much as Jeremy Brett's, the Granada series remains the definitive film version of Sherlock Holmes to me. Of course this latest wave of film versions of Sherlock has me rereading some of the original stories.

If it's just to see if she's interested, you might be able to find season 1 of Sherlock on Netflix, if you're into that sort of thing - not sure if they're available in the US tho (I'm Canada-based).

I'm a fan of nearly all Sherlock Holmes incarnations, and I'm a bit ambivalent about Sherlock. I find it hard to like the character of Sherlock himself, as he's played as a bit of a sociopath. I much prefer a Holmes with demonstrable empathy and human emotions (even remote). Then again, Jeremy Brett is my Holmes, which I think explains everything.

I actually watch it. I don't get into it as some people. But I do enjoy watching it.

I tend to lean more towards Robert Downey, Jr.'s version or Richard Roxburgh (more Richard than Robert though). But I do like Granada's version, though.

Nobody likes everything.

I can't watch Once Upon A Time, for example, and White Collar leaves me completely cold.

There's a lot of stuff out there. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

I realize that, but while viewers of the shows you mention are scattered across my f'list, Sherlock seems to have large numbers and a fervent fan reaction that I don't see for those other two shows. So it would've been nice to be able to participate in that, is all.

That's a good point. It is always nice to have a large group interested in the things you do. It not only gives you lots of things to read, it also gives you a number of minds to bounce ideas off and to be--infected with new ideas and enthusiasms.

I like Sherlock--I just don't think that the stories I'd be interested in writing are the ones people would want to read.

And I do enjoy the movie versions a lot. No stories in my head about it, but I enjoy watching them. And RDJ's occasionally goofy expressions.

I love the Granada versions. And I love Peter Wingfield's James Watson in Sanctuary.

No no no -- you're NOT the only one who doesn't get BBC's Sherlock. I tried, truly, but it just does nothing for me. The movie version on the other hand . . . wow. Of course, that could just be the RDJ goodness.

For that matter, I'll come clean and confess I've never really become enamoured of Firefly. I may be the only person in the world (or at least the only Whedon fan) who doesn't like it. On the other hand, I am endlessly fascinated by the obscure Bedlam.

The point is, different people like different things, and that's what makes fandom great. So long as we all respect each other's rights to like what we like, we'll be fine.

you are not alone - the show is ok, I mean I wouldn't turn it OFF it was on but I wouldn't mind leaving the room to find something better to do. I don't know. The movies were just so delightful to me, and the shows are NOTHING like the movies, so I guess one has everything I love and the other... doesn't

I'm not a huge fan of the show. I can appreciate the actors, the story, the writing and whatnot, but I don't have the desperate need to be consumed by the last episode like most of Tumblr right now.

(I feel bad for wanting to say 'get over it' and rolling my eyes whenever I see another sad-Sherlock-John image post.)
