ithildin: (Avengers - Sif)
There's been a lot of talk about why Avengers is being released a week later in North America.

"The Avengers," Skipping US in New Trend, Makes $178 Mil Abroad

Disney was not going to have another “John Carter” debacle on its hands, that’s for sure. They released their Marvel blockbuster, “The Avengers,” in 13 countries over the weekend. The audiences didn’t all speak English, and that may have been a good thing. The studio raked in over $178 million. By the time “The Avengers” opens here on Friday, May 4th, the studio will be in the clear. And they’ll still have another dozen countries to go to, like Russia, which is turning into a go-to audience for misunderstood films. But hey, “The Avengers” may be good. It has a 97% rating so far on Rottentomatoes.com.

And this: "Battleship" Avoids U.S. Release and Makes $170 Mil Around the World
“Battleship,” Universal Pictures’ big summer entertainment, cost over $200 million to make. You know it’s cheesy and not very good, so why subject the studio to American reviews? Very wisely, Universal has been opening “Battleship” around the world in advance of its May 18th U.S. landing. And the result: already $129 million in the bank. And more to come.

I'm very happy about Avengers and disappointed about Battleship...even with Liam Neeson, I think it looks stupid and it confused my nephew into thinking it was a fourth Tranformers.

I'm really disappointed to see Peter Berg's name attached to it. :/

Well, good to know some people have logic reasons for doing strange things, too much insanity in the world as it is:).
(BTW, learned yesterday that an IMAX opened in my city last week... Avengers are well worth to try it out:))

Interesting. Shoulda guessed it would be down to money.

I'm surprised they were nervous about Avengers though - it's a very different beast to John Carter, with a large built-in fanbase, and the not-really-prequels having good gross individually, this wasn't exactly a shot in the dark. *shrugs* If it means I get it a week early, I ain't complaining!! Saw it again today and Joss is still my master :) Have a great time in Vegas, I hope you love it as much as I have.

I have to say, that's pretty sensible! Of course that now opens up the possibility of more *bad idea movies* being made because they know they'll recoup the costs overseas ...

I wondered about this -- then figured it had to be something to do with the funding.
