ithildin: (Bloom No More)
Just watched episode one.

Love the Welsh accents. Not something I get to hear a lot over here.

Nice kitchens everyone in Cardiff seem to have.

Not really liking anyone on the Torchwood team. Rapist guy -- really nice /sarcasm. Please tell me something bad happens to him.

Jack just isn't as hot as I remember. Maybe it was the chemistry of the DW eps he was in or something, but he's just not doing it for me.

I like Gwen. She's plucky.

Yes, I'll watch the other eps before passing judgment! This is just my initial impression.

:O!!!!

Jack got HOTTER, to me.

Maybe you need to stare at my icon some more. :D?

Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind :)

Sacriledge!

Just kidding...if we all had the same taste things would be very boring.

You know, thinking about it, I think I just got too excited about the show, and felt kind of let down. Happens to me a lot :) But if I'm true to form, I'll either end up hating it, or adoring it. Never any happy medium!

I've seen crappy student kitchens in Cardiff, so it must just be the police paycheck! To be honest Cardiff looks a lot nicer in TW than reality (though it is a nice city) - not that they're plugging the tourism angle or anything :)

Ref Owen (rapist guy), he is a wanker but I kind of like that. Not like like, just that the TW team are ordinary people who've been let loose on extraordinary technology. Their ethics are just a little compromised - Owen's more than most - as shown by the fact that Gwen has to nag them into helping humanity rather than just analysing doohickeys.

It does look like a nice city. I've always wanted to go to Wales :) I think the fact that one member was a murderer probably predisposed me to have a crappy opinion of the rest of them. One murders people, another rapes. Since I keep hearing how 'adult' the show was ging to be, I was afraid it was going to be one of those shows where all the 'heroes' are just generally unlikable, bad people from the way the first ep played out.

I'm about 2.5 Eps in now...

(DL'd first 4, but having codec issues with ep 3)

While I have to say I wasn't terribly floored by Ep 1, I'm finding them gradually getting better ep by ep. Can't give any recommendations on Ep 2 without spoilers, but I'll tell you it's a damn bit more "adult" than we're used to from DW, and by Episode 3 the actors playing the Torchwood team seem to finally be settling into a little more relaxed, natural chemistry acting together.

As far as Jack goes, again, by Ep three he's finally starting to grow on me a little again, but he's definitely coming across as a little more serious and angsty here than on DW. Though they need to tone down the suave, debonaire "comic book hero shots" and "if I were any smoother I'd be an oilslick" ego.

I'm still trying to like Gwen, but something about her's just not catching me. But has anyone else noticed that it's the same actress that played Gwyneth in the Doctor Who episode "The Unquiet Dead"? Being that Torchwood's set in Cardiff, on top of the remains of the rift, this can't be coincidence, and Gwen's a decendant.

The shot of him on that steeple thing, loooking over the city in what made me think 'Superman' cracked me up. Not sure that's what they were going for :)

I knew going in it was the same actress, but didn't realize till last night they pretty much have the same name too. So yeah, there has to be a connection.

Yeah, that shot had me trying to knock myself unconcious by beating my head against the arm of the couch...yes, my ex & laughed so hard we couldn't breathe, but that was almost painful ;-)

Well, at first I was just snickering at how Cardiff in general has been a running DW joke for the past 2 years anyway, but when Jack's explaining things to Gwen, he specificly refers to, as the culprit, the rift that Gwyneth gave her life to close...I have sneaking suspicion that's going to play into Gwen's storyline later on somehow...the new DW has focused alot on "fate" and "signs" like Bad Wolf, etc, so coincidence is rarely just coincidence with these archs...

And maybe I'm just a wrong-headed little person, but I don't really mind Owen so much (he reminds me oddly of my little brother)...while I think the stunt with the alien pherimone was irresponsible and a bit smarmy, I can't consider it anything like "rape"...there's a world of difference between making someone ucontrollably "horny", and rendering them unconcious to take advantage of like a date-rape drug would do...then again, I'm a fan of Kronos too, at least in the realm of fiction, so...

But don't worry, Owen's hormones bite him in the ass later on anyway...

Honest to god -- Owen's not a rapist. I know sensitivities run super-high when it comes to anything sex related, but he's just not meant to be read that way.

The condemnations of him have put me off this fandom for good.

Honest, these are just my first impressions off the top of my head. I don't know about the fandom in general because I've really tried to avoid reading any details so I could try and watch at least the first few episodes without too much knowledge.

So, my first impression of that guy was that he was the same sort who puts drugs in a girl's drink at a bar. Except he used an alien device. If it wasn't their intention to portray him that way, I guess it went right over my head :)I am reserving judgment on everything for at least the first half dozen episodes.

If it were only one reasoned response to Owen, I doubt my reaction would have been so strong -- but there was so much Owen-bashing going on, including the fast and free use of the label "rapist," that ultimately I decided I had nothing in common with those points of view.

It wasn't a date rape drug. It was an aphrodisiac irresponsibly, selfishly, used -- I don't remember, were all the characters in the AP film "Love Potion #9" tarred with the rapist brush? This is exactly the same plot device, used in exactly the same rather light-hearted, farcical spirit.

Sorry, never even heard of that movie so can't answer.

While it wasn't a drug, that was how it struck me watching it. Can't help it, but that's the first thing that I thought of and it just creeped me out.

I have three more episodes to watch, and I'm hoping that I'll get a better idea of what and who these people are.
