I just turned the channel a few minutes ago to the news that President Ford had died. Back when I was in junior high, his was the very first presidential campaign I volunteered for. It was part of a school assignment, to collect information on the election, and I stuck around and helped out. It was the beginning of a life long interest in politics for me. Odd the things you remember at times like these.

My prayers for him and for his family.

He was a reasonably good president, I think, and as far as I could tell, a very good man.

I could never see what else he could have done BUT pardon Nixon. Anything else at that time would have torn the country further apart than it already was. And Nixon couldn't have been impeached, since he'd resigned; he could only have been arrested like a common felon, and I can't see what would have been served by convicting and jailing him for crimes the majority of us knew he'd committed. Justice, maybe. I'm not always certain justice is better than mercy.

But the pardon killed his chances. I think Ford himself knew that.

Well said.
His passing was sad since he was the first president I remember.

While it's sad, would that we all could live such a long fulfilled life surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Life will be rather interesting around here next week what with the roads closed (for security) for the lying in repose, funeral, and burial. Yes, I am alive. Yes, I do have some pictures (blog duplicated on LJ). No, I will not be downtown to take further pictures.
