I don't get HBO, so I've never seen it (no, I've never seen Deadwood either), but I came across the DVDs of S1 on Amazon. Is it worth buying? How many seasons are there? Do I actually need another TV show to watch?

These and other burning questions await answers.

I've never seen it but.......

I heard Rome is really, really good. And sexy too. I'm planning to buy my copy soon:)

As far as I'm aware, there's only the one season so far, but I think there's a second one about to start showing.

I personally thought that it had a few entertaining moments, but for the most part, it was soooooo boring. I got it on Netflix (which I HIGHLY recommend to try out shows and movies before buying) and literally ended up forcing myself to watch. Even then, I bailed before the final two episodes and just sent that disc back unwatched.

I really could not muster up the smallest ounce of caring over most of the characters. (Titus Pullo being the one shining exception, if only because he was so crass and coarse and completely unlike any of the other stuffed-shirt characters.) Just really left me cold overall.

But that's my opinion. YMMV.

Rome is fantastic! Great actors, great scrips, a strong amount of historical accuracy (not perfect, but good enough *g*), stunning costumes and scenery, and plenty of awesome (albeit very bloody) fight scenes.
I love it to bits. : )
Oh, and as for your seasons question - it's currently on season two, which, unfortunately will be the last one (budget concerns, boo!). Each season is only 13 episodes long, so you'll be able to watch it without it taking up a year or three.

Rome is absolutely fabulous. They've just started airing the second season in the US on HBO (in fact I just watched the season premiere tonight after its airing last night). As it's HBO, it's a short series -- twelve or thirteen eps in Season One. And I've heard that Season Two will only be ca. 9 eps.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, it's well worth the watch if you're at all keen about Roman history and a well acted and written series (there's not a weak character in the lot IMHO). As with all good series, this actually prompted me to go back and reread my history to prep for the upcoming story lines.

(And on a related note, the actress who plays Suzie plays the wife of Vorenus -- one half of the slash pairing which I'm sure you've heard about already ;) But even there -- it's not so much slash as genuine love and affection and devotion.)

I whole heartedly recommend this show.

I absolutely adore Rome. The storylines are brilliant and it's WONDERFUL to see the beautiful scenic and majestic filmmaking they put into it. No expense is spared in creating Rome during that period.

It's totally debaucherous (is that a word?) just like Rome was at the time...so be prepared for that. Lots of nudity and sex scenes. LOTS.

But the story is good too. Excellent. Titus Pullo is just *thud* worthy. Really.

:)

Pullo's so...well, "guh" says it all really doesn't it?

Rome is great, wonderful, fantastic and any other superlatives you might care for.

The fact that they actually went into the characters' backgrounds as a means to explain their politics hooked me just as much as the fact that they showed Roman life from each end of the social structure. Sets and costuming were also amazing :)

I absolutely loved the first series, though I did hear that it was massacred edited for US tv because the UK episodes were too long. At least an hour was lost by the end of the first series, hence me waiting until the BBC show series 2 rather than downloading the HBO version.

REALLY? I hadn't heard that! Does that mean longer episodes are somewhere just waiting for my squeeing and drooling? Um..I mean...appreciation?!

Maybe on the DVD, or on some naughty site where one can d/l BBC eps :)

Rome is a very good series. I loved watc=hing the first season. It is a pretty good Historical drama. it is not exactly true to the real history, but geos along with the basic story. If you love Rome and history you will love this show. Rome, Sopranos, 24 and Deadwaood are about the only shows I watch except for news and sports.
I would recommend getting it.
