I'm working on prepping tomorrow night's dinner: guacamole, pico de gallo, sauteed shitake and portabella mushrooms for the quesadillas. The pico de gallo needs a jalapeño and an onion chopped. I'm now at the 'can't breath can't see stage'. I'm horribly allergic to the vapours from fresh peppers. The first time I cut up serranos, Nin came home from the store and thought I was in need of medical attention. My face was beet red, my eyes were almost shut, and even two hits from my inhaler couldn't stop me from wheezing. Thankfully, the pico only needs one jalapeño, so I'm only slightly wheezy, and no red face. Then came the onion... argh!! That's where the barely able to see part comes from.

So I'm taking a wine break before I move onto the mushrooms. Figure seeing properly is good when using a knife! And wine breaks are of the good regardless [g]

What's everyone else doing?

Everything sounds good...except for the jalapenos... Ick! Too spicy for me!

As for what I'm doing? Watching Edward Scissorhands and working on my [livejournal.com profile] femslash07 piece...

A few short years ago, I would have agreed with you [g] Now I'm really into spicy food, where before, I thought just putting black pepper on something was too hot. But this isn't really spicy. The recipe calls for two of them, and I don't even use a whole one. It's quite subtle. and I take the seeds and pulp out to tone down the heat even more.

I haven't watched that in a while! It always makes me cry.

Any kind of hot peppers are really too hot for me. And it sucks, because I want to eat the spicy foods, but it really fucks with my stomach. So I refrain...

Oh, bummer :((( My brother has that problem (he had to have emergency surgery, the same thing the Bee Gee brother died of, and they had to redo his insides) , but he started taking digestive enzymes, and he says that really helps, though in general he doesn't like the taste of spicy foods. So I have to tone it down for him.

Have you tried cutting these things up under a slow stream of water?

Yeah, that's how I do the initial cutting in half and seeding, but since it has to be minced really tiny, it's hard to get done in the bottom of the sink. Plus, even a slow stream starts to wash away the teensy bits [g]

Have you considered a surgical mask and safety goggles like carpenters wear? It might be better than turning purple and scaring roommates into fits. I have decided to start wearing masks when I clean my room because dust makes me wheeze and all sorts of fun things.

Other than that, I am waiting waiting waiting for Friday to end so I can go home, eat dinner, and go into a state of minor collapse.

After the first incident, I started wearing goggles and a mask. It only sort of works, but it's better than nothing. For anything more than a jalapeno, I usually draft Nin into being my sous chef :)I also try and use dried peppers instead fo fresh. I have Anaheims, New Mexico, Ancho, and some other one I can't recall.
