I notice on other Journals that people's icons/user pics show up on their individual posts. Is that something that only happens in paid mode? When I make an entry, I see the userpic menu under screen comments, and it lists my pics, so I'm slightly baffled. Thanks for the newbie help!

That drop down userpic menu lets you choose your user pic every time you post, or comment in other journals. If you don't choose one, lj chooses the pic you have assigned as default - if you haven't chosen a default, lj chooses a default randomly for you.

You should probably study the lj faq a bit - it helped me tremendously in the beginning, and I am still learning too...

See, that's what I thought from reading the FAQ, and as far as I know, I've done all the required things. Somewhere I must have missed a box to click or something. Just after going through everything I could think of for the umpteenth time, I figured I should try asking :) It'll probably be something that will make me go DUH when I figure it out.

Are you saying that you do not have the option to decide your userpics when posting replies? There should be a drop down menu you can click on. Then you just guide your mouse to the pic you want.

Or are you saying that you cannot see userpics on your LJ site?

Errr...I think :) I'm saying that when I go to someone's journal, I see along with their posts, their userpic. Mine only show up with comments, or on the individual entry page, not on the 'main page'. The only place my userpic is on the main page, is over on the left hand sidebar under the links.

Does that make sense?

Hey, Ith, go to your user info page, click on edit user info, scroll down until you get to edit user pics, and make sure the little default user pic box is checked. If it's not, lj won't post a default pic for you, and if you don't specify in your posts, you won't have a pic there. You don't get the drop down menu option in a reply or comment on another user's journal, so if you don't have a default selected, your comments won't have pics.

I think what I think I'm seeing is something people with paid accounts have personalized. Cus I've ticked every box and checked it twice :)

I think I know what you mean now.

Some page layouts are set-up to not show pics on the main page--except for one, usually at the right or left corner of the page. (My layout is like this.)

Click on Manage Journal and go to Customize.

Click on Edit Customizations

Click on page layout, appearance, or options (title depends on the particular layout)

On my blog style page I click on: Options

I scroll down to:

Show User Pictures on Entries
Here you can check box and click YES

Other options include:

Show User Pictures on Entries on your Friends Page

Show User Picture on the Entry page

Show User Pictures on Comments

You did! You know what I realized thanks to your comment? That the only thing I hadn't messed with was the thing that switches to the new style S2. When you set up a new journal, it defaults to the Old Style S1. I had literally gone through every sub menu except for that one drop down. Changing to S2 totally changes the customize choices menus. I switched briefly, but don't have the time to mess with it today, but I'll look at it more in depth at some point. I switched back to S1.
