I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] mischief5 and she wanted me to explain 'IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!' -- the comment I made regarding FanLib last week. So I did, and I think she hurt herself laughing. I told her that I'd been on a roll lately, and had caused multiple spew moments on my House list today. See, I had a rant about cutesy pairing nicknames encroaching on every single fandom. Things like 'Spuffy' and 'McShep'. Absolutely nails down a chalkboard! Then I see it in House fandom. There's 'Huddy' and 'Hameron'?!?! What the frell? So that set off my rant to the list. And as email lists do, there's the back and forth replying. The highlights (so to speak):

My comment was 'Hameron' was the newest breakfast sandwich at Denny's.

Then somebody said that she hadn't come across a cutesy name for Jack/Daniel, to which I replied, 'BOURBON!'

Then the subject of Kirk/Spick came up, and a list member said she'd seen them now referred to as 'Spirk'!!!! My response?

[dies a thousand painful deaths] Isn't that like fandom sacrilege or
something? And I'm not even a slasher, and that pains me. Damn kids!

But it got worse! I was informed that some people had seen 'Spork'!! That degenerated into a Taco Bell thread which ended in somebody wondering what House, Wilson and the Ducklings would get at Taco Bell?

Duh! What do you think my response was? FOOD POISONING!

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

Just did a mini-rant of my own about it, esp. where Heroes fandom is concerned. I hate that Mylar, Paire, Plaude, etc. THEY JUST IRRITATE THE CRAP OUT OF ME.

Heh, now see a couple of slasher friends of mine got into how to smash Kirk/Spock after one of them did a rant against smashes. One of them came up with Kock, and they decided that was the slash smash name to end all slash smash names. I don't like smash names myself, but I couldn't forget that one since it seemed like they were right. B-)

I am so not a fan of paired names of that sort. They reduce the individuals/ characters involved to simple cut-out characters defined by the romantic pairing.

As with so many things, I blame Ben Affleck. (Okay, so he was watchable in Shakespeare in Love and in Voyage of the Mimi. afaic, that's it. OTOH, in Shakespeare in Love, he was the perfect Mercutio. And he does have nice legs and look good in a doublet.)

fwiw, I've only come across this abomination in rl tabloid "romances" and HP fandom - where I, personally, cannot imagine/ envision Sn-anything. Don't get me wrong - love the character, but it's not psychologically possible the way he's written. And if you have to change the character's psychological profile to get your story written, then you might as well change the name anyway because you've created an OFC.

But that's another rant.
