As some of you have probably read over the last few months, I'm reading and rereading really old Highlander fic that I've stashed away over the last ten years. I have found some some wonderful new stuff lately by [livejournal.com profile] keerawa & [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate, amongst others, but I'd love to read more. So if there are stories you've read, or have written -- don't be shy! -- that you'd like to rec that are het or gen, please do. Even if you have a rec that's vaguely slashy (I think I've seen the term pre-slash?) that would be kewl too. OCs are fine, so are xovers, any rating at all.

Thank you in advance for your input!

Hon, if you don't read slash, you're missing some of the best stories in fandom, including Rhiannon's Linewars and Sharon Cross' Katastrophe (dead on characters and hysterically funny!!) not to mention her eerie AU Specter series. MacGeorge's Under the Boardwalk, Maygra, Unovis, Killa, The Krell...the list goes on!!

Come to think of it, I may be the only one who does write gen. That's just plain scary. And that's only because I haven't gotten to it yet. Wow.

There is a WIP by Nutmeg called "As Time Goes By" that's pretty good. You can find it here (http://members.shaw.ca/sylviavolk/). It's about halfway down the page and starts with "Fundamental Things". You can also check out Daire's Fanfic Refuge (http://www.daire.org/refuge/index.html). It's mostly G or PG and what isn't is clearly marked. There's one on there by Willusa that gave me the shivers: "Go".

I hope that helps you. Do try some slash, though. You can always skip over anything that you don't like. JMHO. :)

Well, I write it too :) Just a teeny minority of the fandom, I know.

I have tried the skipping over thing, but the way I read is in flashes of content, so that doesn't work so well. And once I hit the slash, it throws me out of the story.

Thanks for the pointers :)

I write gen, too.

So do amonitrate and Sylvia Volk.

Have you read Sylvia Volk?

Yep :) Found her stuff a few months back. Some I really like, others don't quite work for me. But they're all very well written, so that I really do appreciate.

Kevin Matsumoto wrote a couple of FK/Highlander crossovers that I really liked. His stuff is on Mel's fkfanfic page (look for it alphabetically by author's last name).

There's also a bit somebody sent me ages and ages ago, a parody about Duncan receiving a "gay quickening" and Methos helping him through it--one of the funniest things EVER. Have you ever seen that one?

Yeah, I read his stuff back when it was new. But no, I haven't read the parody story.

Uhm... do you want a complete list?

Date: 2006-06-14 10:46 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com
Well... I don't have time to look for links now, so you'll have to try google (but if that doesn't help, you can ask me and I'll try to find the link for you). Anyway: Here's most of what I've printed out over the last eight years:

- almost everything by Sylvia Volk
- lots of stuff by Amand-r, esp. Heat Goes to Cold, No-Flesh And Not-a-Man
- most of amonitrate's stuff
- Kat Allison's September Song and Strata (kinda slashy, but not focused on the sex)
- Cassidy: Gretchen Doesn't Live Here Anymore
- some stories by Teresa Coffman, esp. The Better Part of Valor
- a lot of Julie Fortune's stuff
- devo's Bitter As Honey
- quite a few of jacquez's stories, esp. Methos By Firelight
- Jeanne Rose: Black Sand
- quite a few of Jay Tryfanstone's fics
- Sandra MacDonald's WW2 trilogy and parts of the Lay Down Your Sword trilogy
- the Wombat: Rapture (slash, but not D/M - it's an X-Files crossover, with a Mulder/Methos pairing that works very well for me, somehow. Brilliant dialogue and a juicy plot, too.)
- Paula Stiles's Armed Intervention series

There ya go. All in all, around 2500 pages of fic, I'd guess. That should last you a while. But you probably know more than half of these already. ;-)

Eeek! Overlooked one of my folders:

Date: 2006-06-14 10:55 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hmpf.livejournal.com
in which there is:

Janeen Grohsmeyer & Genevieve Clemens: Long Have I Waited

Janeen Grohsmeyer: Just A Game

I didn't know there was that much gen out there! Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...VBEG. I'll do a search on your recs. I'd like to read them. Thanks!
ext_9031: (From Hell)
Yeah, I remember reading lots of gen back when the show was still on, it was just finding newer fic that was the problem. And I do like to read more adult sorts of things too, and anything new in that category has been impossible to find. Not saying it might not be out there, just I can't find it :)
ext_9031: (Wildwood)
A few recs from me. I'll pimp one of my best friend's fic :)

The Centre Cannot Hold
http://www.seventh-dimension.org/stories/Allen/CentreCannotHold.txt
For the Reckoning Comes
http://www.seventh-dimension.org/stories/Allen/FortheReckoningComes.txt
In Fire Restored (I titled the third one if I recall)
http://www.seventh-dimension.org/stories/Allen/InFireRestored.txt

And Ecolea's Changing of the Guard series is great. They're all on seventh dimension.

Well, to be fair...

a couple of the stories I recced here *are* slash. I'm predominantly, but not exclusively a gen reader in this fandom.

But checking out these authors will in most cases lead you to *some* gen at least, even if most of them also write slash.

You know...

sometimes I really wonder if we shouldn't try to find a way to raise the visibility of gen in this fandom a bit. I'd like to see a little bit more gen produced again... And, while the fandom is not *hostile* to gen, I think many - newbies in particular - take HL as a pretty much exclusively slash fandom, and that's a bit sad, considering the quality of some of the gen out there. There's quite a bit of brilliant HL gen out there, and I'm sure more could be produced...
ext_9031: (Last Beer)
Thanks :) some I've read, some I haven't -- or at least don't remember them by titles [g] It's funny, because as much as I don't like Duncan/Methos, I like Mulder/Scully even less! So it's not just slash pairings that I can't get into.
Even in fandoms like Farscape, where the main pairing is the perfectly canonical, and perfectly hot, John/Aeryn, I'm not much one for shippy fic. It's not that I'm not interested in human interaction or relationships - but I'm not much interested in the romantic part of human relationships, I guess.

Then again, occasionally I get weirdly shippy about unlikely pairings, both het and slash, so... ;-)
ext_9031: (Lantern Reflection)
I've always said I'm something of an anti-shipper :) I rarely like the 'canon' pairings. and if I do like a pairing, it's never the usual. I think Buffy/Angel was about the only canon pairing I was into. [thinks] I liked Duncan/Tessa, and I like Amanda/Duncan just fine too.
me either. I prefer DM/M to Mulder/Scully, oddly.

All Fall Down (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2213650/1/) by lithium_doll is probably my favourite recent find :-) It's het, and fairly gen (PG for the chopping off of heads, perhaps)

(I'm open to all ratings, even PWPs, so no worries about keeping it PG.)

Highlander recs

Date: 2006-06-14 09:10 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] weesam.livejournal.com
Andie P's Rite of Fire as well as Bodypaint, Bartabs and Beer. Both at Seventh Dimension
DL Witherspoon's wonderful Restoration series, of course.
Chris C's Wars
I quite like Cameron Dial's work
Lisa W's Passion and Rain, which I think is at Seventh Dimension
Xenon's wonderful Reluctant Hero
Improv by Macy Gael is short but funny
The Hundred series by PO Perdue at Seventh Dimension
Three Days Down by Jane St Clair
The Devil Went Down to Geneva and How the Horseman Stole Christmas by Ekat
Anything by Susanna, but especially Judge, Jury and Pentetuch (both at Quill Club)
Tarsh's Syni Molniya. No Methos, but a good story.

As for crossovers, I liked
Death and the End of the World by Stacia (Methos/Willow)
Shades of Grey series by Jenni W is a brillant Methos/Angel non-slash friendship
Wajag's Best Laid Plans (Stargate/HL)
Everything by Ecolea
Lori Wright's Sentinel crossovers
The Curious Incident of the Doc in the Nighttime by Taz

I know there's heaps more gen I like, but that will do for now.

Sam

Oh, and I've always liked Willow/Methos, so thanks again :) I'm looking over that one and realized it's one I missed on TTH.
