I see in the latest HL Flash that reccers are needed on the [livejournal.com profile] hl_recs comm. In the past, I've toyed with the idea of volunteering, but I've always decided against it. It just seems very intimidating. First off, there's the 'why you should read this' part. If I suck at summaries, explaining why somebody should read a certain piece of fic is something I suck at even more. I get to that part and can't seem to come up with much more than 'Because it's good!', which isn't at all sufficient, I know. Then I'm never sure how many/how often I need to post recs in a month. Or if it has to be a theme, or just fic I like in general.

As you can tell, I'm pondering volunteering again, and once more talking myself out of it. Except this time, I'm typing myself out of it [g]

Errr... that about covers it. As you were.

Later: I volunteered for April, so I have three months to angst.

Please, don't talk yourself out of it! :D We do need your help. I'm not sure what happened to this month's reccer, and we only have a couple more lined up.

If I knew what I was supposed to do/how I was supposed to do it [g] And if I could get over the intimidation factor.

I'll ponder :)

I was tempted too, but decided against it because last time I signed up for something like that, I was made of FAIL! I was a bad, bad reccer, who kept forgetting to post the bloody things! You, however, are much more responsible that way; I think you should do it and, if you can't think of something for the why you should read this part, just type: Because I Said So

just type: Because I Said So

Hee! I don't think that's allowed [g]

Ah, you should.
The requirements for [livejournal.com profile] hl_recs are pretty simple and listed here (http://community.livejournal.com/hl_recs/2296.html).

Four recs a month are all you need to make. For the "why read this" part, you're doing fine if you mentions one thing about the story that appealed to you -- it was funny, Methos got wet, boots pretty. The good thing about a recs community is that it brings together different tastes and appreciations. Pretty soon I'll have up the list of fiction posted in 2007, so there will be another source to check for recent things.

Okay, I can definitely think of four fics to rec, more actually, as long as it isn't a theme. That I'm not sure I would have enough recs for, depending on the theme. And if that sort of 'why you should read' is acceptable, then it removes my biggest angst

You will be fine - fantastic even! Will you be reccing gen and slash?

I can't rec slash since I don't read it. I thought I was supposed to rec things I've read. Am I incorrect in this?

The more I think about it, I think this was a bad idea. One of the reasons I never volunteered is that most people only read slash and rec slash and would have no interest in anything I would recommend. I think I should have stuck with my first impulse. I need to remember I'm not a mainstream Highlander fan, and never will be. What the hell was I thinking?

But that's really not quite true any longer. I was just teasing you. However, looking at the Christmas stories, I would say there is a wealth of readers who are interested in gen stories and would love some good recs. Since you have been in the fandom awhile, your recs would be very worthwhile and appreciated. Think about it please.

I'll think about it, but after I stop quietly freaking out.

And just think of some of the new fans coming in who aren't interested in slash. It must be maddening for them to keep running into websites that only offer slash. I'm sure they are probably wondering where to go to get the gen recs. Or having to trudge through the "not so good" stories in search of the few that are very good.

Unfortunately, the older stuff I've long last track of. In the very beginning, I used to save fic from the HIGHLA fic list, but I lost most of that three or four computers ago. And then there was stuff I saved from HLX, the 'adult' fic list. I'm not sure any of that is archived anywhere anymore. Maybe if I scrounge around 7th Dimension I might refind some things, but without titles, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack!

I never thought a decade ago I'd have to actually remember this stuff!
