ithildin: (Methos - Darkness)
I haven't posted one of these in a while since interest seemed to have been waning. But I thought there had been enough of a break that we could pick up the discussions again.

Highlander Season Five

Comes a Horseman
Air Date: Feb. 1997

MacLeod knew him as Melvin Koren, a desperado who left a trail of death and fire across the Old West, but Cassandra remembers him as an evil far older. He is Kronos, leader of the Four Horsemen, mounted Bronze Age raiders who murdered, raped, and pillaged their way across two continents. Never was a band of Immortals more cruel or more feared. He destroyed Cassandra's people and she's been hunting him across the millenia. But Kronos has a different target now -- Methos.

I think one of the biggest "issues" that people seem to have with this episode (and there aren't many lol) is Cassandra's vengeful and seemingly irrational behavior. She does seem to have not dealt with her emotions at all in the long span of time between then and the present day. I think this is a totally feasible plot point. She could have repressed the memories for a certain amount of time, things could have just backed up on her recently etc., etc. The problem is, imo, that the Cassandra we've already met does seem to be a bit manipulative when it comes to Duncan. I think it might be a case of her entire story not being thought out when she was first introduced (and why would it be? They didn't know Methos would catch on. They didn't know where it was going and that's understandable). She doesn't seem like as much of a victim prior to these episodes which I think makes the audience question her a bit more and turn her into almost a villain when she is meant to be the victim. Anyway, there is a certain amount of coincidence in the plot--Kronos happens to show up while Methos is in town for the first time in a very, very long time. Cassandra after all these years has started looking for Kronos (He's been around and it seems unlikely that she wouldn't have gone looking for/made sure he was gone, if she was still this vengeful). A lot of the Highlander world deals with coincidence, but I think when it's an episode so many people really love and that focuses in large part on a very popular character in a not very good light, it's easy to almost nitpick on details that in a normal episode wouldn't be as easily latched onto.

I have no problem with Cassandra still being angry at what happened to her, but I had a major problem with the way she manipulated Duncan -- and how he fell for it -- especially as I still had a bad taste on my mouth from Prophecy and her behavior with Duncan as a child.
