A recap of the web chat Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro did yesterday on the two Hobbit films. Lots of interesting details, like...

"Much to this writer’s delight, del Toro delivered the first statement of any kind about how the large group of Dwarves from the source material will be handled.

Tolkien wrote 13 dwarves and I intend to use 13 dwarves. I am, in fact, thrilled to keep them all and have them be distinguishable and affecting as characters. Much of the drama and emotion in the last third of the book and film will come from them."

That's good, but I still remain somewhat sceptical about that second movie.

What I would really love to see on the big screen is "The Silmarillion", which I vastly prefer to "The Hobbit". I don't think I ever will though.

I'm actually really looking forward to the second movie. As for the Silmarillion, as ticked off as Christopher Tolkien is at New Line (He's in court in CA trying to get the movie rights taken away for the Hobbit), I don't see him selling the rights any time soon. But I'd also love to see parts of it made into movies.

It could be good, or it could be bad. :P I'll go and see it anyway. The thing is, as far as I know, there isn't that much written about what Gandalf is doing when he runs off in the later part of "The Hobbit". So are they just going to make some stuff up? That's what concerns me.

There is information, it just wasn't all in the original books. Some of it is in the books CT put together after his father's death. My assumption is that it will be set around the White Council driving the Necromancer out of Dol Guldor and then finding out afterwards that it was Sauron.

It's been a while since I last read all the appendixes and assorted Middle-Earth material I have and I can't remember much of anything about that. :P

You're probably right about what it's gonna be about. Probably will be where we'll see Aragorn too.

There's bits and pieces scattered in the appendices. There's a timeline of the Third Age in Appendix B, for example that mentions it. Should be interesting!
