I think we're going to go see Hell Boy after work tomorrow. It was either that or Dark Knight, but DK would have been full price due to it showing after 6pm, and I hate paying full price for a movie unless it's something I'm really looking forward to seeing in advance. So Dark Knight will be the week after at some point. What I really want to see Mama Mia. And since we only have one movie theater here, we need to work these in fairly quickly before they leave. And I think that's it for the summer movie season.

I haven't read many spoilers for DK, but it seems most of the reaction is based around Heath Ledger and it being his last movie. If you don't really know much about him, and aren't really aware of him going in, does the movie stand up aside from that and is it enjoyable? I'm just wondering at this point if it might be better to wait for it on PPV or the DVD.

Yes, Dark Knight definitely stands on its own as more than just Heath Ledger's last film, although a big part of that is his absolutely amazing performance as the Joker. I will say, though, that DK is very dark. And there were moments where the Joker's psychopathy was so intense, it was uncomfortable to watch - but I think that's being true to the character & the comic books from which the movie was drawn, IMO.

But if you're even remotely a fan of the Batman universe or dark & angsty superhero movies or summer blockbusters full of violence and explosions, then I'd say DK is a don't miss.

Dark Knight is a fantastic movie on all its own. Heath's performance is just amazing, I never saw Heath, just the Joker. But Arron Eckhart is fantastic as well. The move is long, it seems almost like 2 movies, and yep DARK.

I would totally recc it. I am not a big super hero movie fan, but this felt like much more then that. It is worth checking out.

You don't have to know anything about Heath Ledger to find his performance incredible, honestly. But yes, there is a LOT to this movie. It's amazing. Best thing I've seen all summer, and I was horribly cranky and in an awful mood during it and STILL loved it.

Haven't seen it yet - waiting a bit for the rush to die down, but everything I've heard about it is pretty good - everything, not just Ledger's role.

I haven't seen anything this summer so far, but since I have money now (yeah!), I'm contemplating on seeing Indiana Jones and Ironman both this week :) especially as they've both been around for a while.

I thought it was a really good movie. I think what happened to Heath was really sad, but I wasn't a big Heath Ledger fan or anything.

He did such an amazing job with "The Joker" though and it didn't matter who was playing him. Christian did a great job with Batman - I thought he was much better than George Clooney.

There was no Boy Wonder though *g*

Can't comment on DK or HB II; however, I can rave about Mamma Mia. This is the first movie I've seen in the theatre in two years or more, and I'm so glad I broke the dry spell with this one.

I will give no spoilers, only tell you the cast is smashing and works well together. (Although, Pierce should not be let near a microphone.) It was fun and I am still humming songs from the movie.

I agree with all of the above recommendations. Heath's performance was amazing, but you don't have to be a Heath Ledgeer fan in order to enjoy the movie. Hell, you don't have to be a Christian Bale fan, either. The movie is very true to the Batman history.. and you don't have to know what it is to follow the movie. It is very dark, and at times I cringed more than I would normally, but all of the performances were outstanding and this is probably one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

I'll admit, my only real experience with Batman is the 60s TV series :) We did see the one before this on PPV, mostly because I'm a huge Ken Watanabe fan. But I thought it was a good movie.

With all the positive comments, I guess we will go see it in theater :)

Thanks!

Good to know! I think sometimes you can lose site of the movie in amongst all the hype.

Yeah, we try and wait for the rush to die down, but still see it before it leaves. It sucks having only one theater!

That should be fun!! Will look forward to your reaction to both.

Yeah, I'd read PB does not have a great voice. It looks like such a fun movie, and I love ABBA, so... :)

The movie was a lot of fun! I think you'd enjoy it as a fan of ABBA. And even if he doesn't have a great voice, he's still wonderful in the movie. And Purr-ty too. ;)

It's fantastic, regardless of it being Heath's last movie. Creepy and dark, and Christian Bale is GUH. Did you see Batman Begins?

Hmm, summer movie season. Haven't seen DK yet, but everyone who has raves that it's fantastic - just very very dark and depressing at times, but that's true to its source so it's a definite must-see. Supposedly it's a movie where there's not one clinker of a performance. We're defintiely going this weekend. Hellboy and Jones - I'm waiting for them on ppv. Not that they're bad, just there's finite money and too many things to see.

For the rest of the season, there's a new Mummy movie (I do love them, so we'll probably catch that in two weeks). And in just under four weeks, there's Clone Wars! Hey, anything new on the Star Wars front is cause for me to celebrate, and C indulges in it too so . . .

I'm lucky - if I miss one, I can just wait a couple of months and it'll show up at the dollar movie :)

Which I'm tempted to do :)

Oh, well, will decide later.

[I must post my review of Mamma Mia in the usual places.]

We went to MM as a family at a Sunday Matinee. Sunday morning the CBS reviewer ripped MM saying he hated the movie and that Pierce sounded like a water buffalo. That same reviewer said that he loved the Broadway version but hated ABBA. Said they sounded like the Supremes with a brain damaged composer. Obviously he was prejudiced. He also didn't like the ensemble dance numbers ... they weren't all that Bollywood even and didn't include the "black light" effects from Broadway. Beats me ... I have no idea what he was expecting.

We went and yes, Pierce does sound like a water buffalo. How he did that to SOS, I do not know. His voice sounds really strained. Really, really strained.

Maybe they set his part outside his range so that Meryl Streep's part would be in her natural range, but I doubt it. Pierce has a nice speaking voice, but he probably has no range. Meryl trained classically (back when) and has a reasonably wide range.

Julie Waters and Christine Baranski are well used, and Stellan does his part in numerous ways.

You will love it. Make sure to stay until the "black crawl" credits.

I think you're right on this. As for the reviewer ripping on the song and dance numbers, they were fun and enjoyable and not really Bollywoodish. (Which doesn't mean that Bollywood numbers are bad, because as a B-wood fan, I enjoy them. *g*) The end credits were fun! *G*
