I think we're going to go see Hell Boy after work tomorrow. It was either that or Dark Knight, but DK would have been full price due to it showing after 6pm, and I hate paying full price for a movie unless it's something I'm really looking forward to seeing in advance. So Dark Knight will be the week after at some point. What I really want to see Mama Mia. And since we only have one movie theater here, we need to work these in fairly quickly before they leave. And I think that's it for the summer movie season.

I haven't read many spoilers for DK, but it seems most of the reaction is based around Heath Ledger and it being his last movie. If you don't really know much about him, and aren't really aware of him going in, does the movie stand up aside from that and is it enjoyable? I'm just wondering at this point if it might be better to wait for it on PPV or the DVD.

Yeah, I'd read PB does not have a great voice. It looks like such a fun movie, and I love ABBA, so... :)

The movie was a lot of fun! I think you'd enjoy it as a fan of ABBA. And even if he doesn't have a great voice, he's still wonderful in the movie. And Purr-ty too. ;)

[I must post my review of Mamma Mia in the usual places.]

We went to MM as a family at a Sunday Matinee. Sunday morning the CBS reviewer ripped MM saying he hated the movie and that Pierce sounded like a water buffalo. That same reviewer said that he loved the Broadway version but hated ABBA. Said they sounded like the Supremes with a brain damaged composer. Obviously he was prejudiced. He also didn't like the ensemble dance numbers ... they weren't all that Bollywood even and didn't include the "black light" effects from Broadway. Beats me ... I have no idea what he was expecting.

We went and yes, Pierce does sound like a water buffalo. How he did that to SOS, I do not know. His voice sounds really strained. Really, really strained.

Maybe they set his part outside his range so that Meryl Streep's part would be in her natural range, but I doubt it. Pierce has a nice speaking voice, but he probably has no range. Meryl trained classically (back when) and has a reasonably wide range.

Julie Waters and Christine Baranski are well used, and Stellan does his part in numerous ways.

You will love it. Make sure to stay until the "black crawl" credits.

I think you're right on this. As for the reviewer ripping on the song and dance numbers, they were fun and enjoyable and not really Bollywoodish. (Which doesn't mean that Bollywood numbers are bad, because as a B-wood fan, I enjoy them. *g*) The end credits were fun! *G*
