I hate my birthday. It's a long standing tradition to hate it, but this year, I seemed to have been lulled into a false sense of cheery good feelings about it. Till tonight. Now I remember why it's a stupid day that isn't worth acknowledging. Note to self: don't get suckered in next year! Considering how crashingly depressed I am right at this moment, by Sunday, I should be a complete basket case. Go me.

I was trying to find something, a prosaic, witty saying to offer you in comfort. But I couldn't find anything that suits, and I've never been accused of being a "quick wit". So, all I can offer is a virtual shoulder and a few virtual pints of Ben & Jerry's Dublin Mudslide. And my cat, Misha, gives you a friendly headbutt, even though he's still pissed at me 'cause I wouldn't let him go outside to say "hello" to the skunk family that was living under our apartment building ;) "slurp"-damn ice cream's melting-guess I shoulda chilled the rum before I added it to the carton.
Ah well, I need to get some sleep-seein' triple from staring at computer monitors all night. Go to bed, you! And I hope that things get better tomorrow. (grins wearily)

*Hugs* This might sound corny and/or weird but ever since I turned 40, I've been fighting back at my birthday by turning the tables on it, so to speak. No birthday presents *for* me, unless they're free (one of my friends gave me an art lesson!); all other presents are given *by* me to someone else. I always take my mom out to lunch to thank her not only for giving birth to me but for doing it in 100F weather with no A/C and for waiting for me for 2 extra weeks!! (That must have been pure hell.) And a little something for my daughter for growing up to be such a cool person. That sort of thing... After all, it's MY birtday and I can do anything I want with it.

This year, I slept till noon, took mom to lunch, came home, played my music loud, read some of your fics, called my kid and made her laugh, had my art lesson, pigged out on Black Tie Cheesecake, had a bubblebath and then read a book until I fell asleep with two fat cats draped over me. Simple, fun and peaceful.

Sometimes you just have to say fuck it and make the day your own. VBEG

Oh my. Well, I won't say Happy Birthday as that is rather trite. And considering your feelings right now, rather inappropriate. Yet birthdays are a celebration of birth... of a new being joining a family... it's *supposed* to be about love and celebration. I'm so sorry you are feeling so down. I do like Mischief's idea of making the day your own to do whatever you wish to. That's the best celebration of all.

What a fantastic idea! Though it can backfire.. my dad asked us to surprise him with "something exciting" for his 50th, so we got him a flying lesson. Oops. He spent two hours with his head in the sickbag due to a wannabe stunt pilot/instructor.

You could do something fun, like a wine tour (if those areas are close enough). A whole day/weekend getting squiffy in the sunshine cos someone else is driving! It worked the last time I got stressed anyway *hic* especially after they threw in a distillery and chocolate factory :)

Sorry about whatever happened tonight to make you think Bday's are a stupid day. I agree you should make the day your own.

I have a tradition of going away at least every other year to "celebrate" my birthday. Often I go alone to get some me time or do something I really want to do. And guess what, on one such trip I met an incredible young women named Ith. Now that was a good birthday.

So remember, you are special and you are cared for by friends here and elsewhere.

I don't know what to say, as I don't know what has caused you to feel this way. I generally enjoy my birthdays, except 30, which sucked. Forty was quite nice though. There was a birthday or two when family members being nuts kind of screwed with things.

Try to to get in your own way. Sometimes by expecting things to be bad, we perpetuate it.

It's just one of those things I can't really explain, but I think I just have bad associations with birthdays from when I was a kid. That, and birthdays and New Years are two days where I look at what I've done in my life and feel like a failure. Now I'm well into my 40s there's the whole biological clock aspect that just adds to it. So it's all that and me just not doing so well last night.

Sounds like your birthday plan is quite lovely :)

That's okay, I'm not adverse to birthday greetings, honest :) Believe it or not, I threw myself a party last year. Figured I deserved one birthday party in my life! I'll get over it, I was just not so good last night. [double hugs] thanks.

Yes, but Scrooge changed his outlook about Christmas and and so can you about your Birthday. Plan something different.

Go for a walk, visit a museum, visit friends and crash on their couch, have pizza and beer or cook yourself a special meal and get a nice bottle of wine, just because its your birthday and your worth it.

Spend the day in bed watching movies or Fk / Highlander or Sharp DVD's. It is your choice, the possibilities are endless. You do not have to do anything for anyone unless you want too.

Do not let others dictate your day. Come on, I expect to hear about a great birthday Sunday.

I agree, I use to hate birthdays, not because of getting older, I actually love the age I am and want a few more year under me, but because I use to focus on all I did not have or did not accomplish. When I stopped that, and focused on what I did have, health, family, friends, a job (even if it was one I did not like), a roof over my head, etc., things changed. It was then I was able to "treat' myself on my birthday.

Some years that meant cooking for family and having them over for dinner. Others is meant going away alone or with friends. A few it meant sleeping and doing nothing but watching TV or reading. I celebrated me, for me, with me.

Feel better. Focus on your positive life events.
