Welcome to the first of our Magnificent Seven episode discussions. In addition to the usual summary, I thought I'd add something that would be both fun and educational. Okay, fun [g] -- a stats list. It contains both canon and fanon items along with an Oops! category.
I'll try and keep the master stats list for the ep updated as the discussion goes on. Try, being the operative word :)
FYI: if you get the Encore channels, M7 airs in the wee hours of the morning.

My Bullet List
Date: 2009-02-11 07:31 pm (UTC)From:Daragh O’Malley rocks!
Mary is the one with guts.
Vin’s so cute with his broom and curly locks.
The black duster is so sexy and the serape of doom doesn’t hold a candle!
Chris’s gunbelt is all covered in silver doodads but is still understated and elegant
Ezra’s sideburns and Bucks mustache! Scary!
Looking rumpled, needs a shave, Ezra’s under pressure
And they’re riding and they’re riding… and music, and they’re riding…
Ezra’s flask!
Ezra and kids. Awww!
JD’s suit looks brand new and they do wear it out over time.
Buck’s birdlike head motions are adorable.
Finally, Ezra shaves! But he has recurring whiskers, then he’s clean shaven again. He’s clean shaven going to the mine and has whiskers when Chris tells him not to run out on him again.. (This is my Oops! for this episode.)
Curly fluffy Vin hair!! Yeah, I’m shallow.
Chris’s hair got longer! Hey, wait! It was almost buzz cut then it’s slicked back. It goes from spiky to slicked back and back again.
Ezra’s dislocated shoulder got really well really fast.
Re: My Bullet List
Date: 2009-02-11 07:55 pm (UTC)From:chris and the guys are going over how anderson came into the village. the older indian (damn if i can remember his name right now) was pointing to where anderson's men came, and where the backup was.
the oops is: chris has his cheroot in his mouth while they're looking at the makeshift 'village' in the sand, then points to the ground with the cheroot never having taken it from his mouth, then it is magically back in his mouth without having put it there... like magic!!
and i noticed the whiskers thing too, and chris's hair. o well, you beat me to it.
and buck's stache... i don't know why, but if he were driving a panel truck and offered me candy with that stache, i would run away screaming.
and yeah his shoulder got better fast! i hurt my shoulder two weeks ago and it sure as hell ain't better yet!
i'm calling shenanigans!

Date: 2009-02-11 07:43 pm (UTC)From:I enjoyed the introduction to the characters, particularly Buck. Ezra is extremely stressed and seems backed into a corner when he's approached by the others. Later, as we get to know him, it seems even more pronounced looking back.
I became a fan of Mary in the pilot. She showed a lot of guts trying to save Nathan. And I admired her for not being intimidated by Chris.
Okay, that's it for now. I'll let everyone else take a turn :)
Re: Now for actual discussion!
Date: 2009-02-11 08:07 pm (UTC)From:and i gotta say, i wasn't a huge fan of JD when he first arrived. i found myself cringing a few times. maybe more for his embarassment, like i was embarassed for him. but he grew on me in a most wonderful way.
and i have a bone to pick about nathan's hanging. if he hung like that for as long as he did, he wouldn't have been able to just "walk it off" like he did. i doubt he would be able to talk, or drink, or speak so clearly.
thos are my thoughts as i sit at work. i'll probably add more later, but i don't want to get busted right now.
p.s. vin is eating as they ride out of town, chomping on something as he says "less ways to split that HUGE pot..."
gotta go...

Date: 2009-02-12 12:06 am (UTC)From:I yelled at the screen when Mary tried to save Nathan, really I think she should have known better than to get close enough to those men that they could just rip the gun out of her hands.
JD did make me cringe more than once, but he was just so earnest, it was pretty obvious that he was brave but needed a little guidance. (and I really liked how the guys eased off him just a little, but lots, once they found out he wasn't some spoiled rich kid)
It seemed like the whole setting up Ezra and Nathan as adversaries because of race thing was tacked on and never really addressed.
What I liked;
Buck's entrance pretty much summed up his entire character in, what? Less than five minutes, which is really effective television. And really funny, you get that he's a ladies man, a little goofy and loyal and caring. You also learn he has a thing against bowler hats, although I don't think it was every completely explained. :)
I though Josiah was a hoot, when they introduced him. The whole inscrutable mystic thing.
I liked Nathan better in the pilot than in some of the other episodes. Here he was very well balanced. And I like Rain.
Umm, Ezra and Vin. *sighs* Two completely different sets of buttons getting pushed here, it would take me all night to talk about them.
And Chris. One minute he's the bad element, the next he seems close to tears. I was a little confused. But, while clearly grieving, he never came off as emotionally unstable or particularly easy to set off, except under specific circumstances (not shooting someone in the back, talking about his past without his knowledge or permission)
Daragh O'Malley has a sexy accent!
And the tribal leader was a great character. I wished he was on the show more.
(I was intending to rewatch last night but due to brats bratifying and housework, I never got the chance, so all this is from memory, sorry)

I adore Daragh O'Malley, so was thrilled when I saw him in the pilot. I wish they'd kept him as a recurring character.

Date: 2009-02-12 04:10 pm (UTC)From:i thought about the ace of spades too! at the end when he was giving the kid the cards, i was like, "hey, the ace has a big ol hole in it!" so he gave the kid crappy cards!!
but the one he threw to distract the... pee-er... that one didn't have a hole in it.
how many decks does one man carry? saddlebags are only so big...

My additions to the list:
# of cheroots clamped 3
# of times Nathan uses knives 3
Ezra is just way too cute with kids...
Want to number times Ezra using words larger than needed, but that would be astronomical
Buck’s head motions are of the awesome...
Can't be lest than 5 years after Civil War. No way men would follow longer...
Theme song makes me think of 'beef it's what's for dinner'
I want Mary’s red dress
Ezra working with his derringer mechanism. You would have to with all that sand and stuff...
Ezra’s disappearing 5 o’clock shadow! He’s clean shaven... He has a maybe-mustache... He’s clean shaven... Etc
Scene of Confederate Colonel messing with his knee... I like, shows why he’s so stubborn and crazy. Because of the laudanum and probably gangrene of his leg.
As for the Colonel: The moment you’re drinking laudanum like you do a flask of Scotch? Oh, yeah... you got a problem!
Is it ironic for Ezra to blow up a Confederate flag?
I still believe Ezra had to be in an army in the Civil War, and in artillery. An officer even. It takes skill to aim a cannon like that... And, it was obviously not aimed the way it was before Ezra got it.

Date: 2009-02-12 02:08 pm (UTC)From:The time line for the show is crap - according to the info given about Nates age it has to be 1867 but all the boys guns come from the 1870s. I'm with you - I can't see those guys roaming the west 15 years after the civil war.
I agree - Ezra had to have artillery experience. Especially when he dismisses Vin's compliment - trying to make less of it by insisting it was a bad shot. Typical Ezra - trying to deflect. I'm sure he didn't want anyone to know just how good he is with a canon

Date: 2009-02-12 02:21 pm (UTC)From:Chris thinks he's a bad ass and yet help strangers for nothing. Plus we know he suffered a terrible personal loss.
Vin is on the run and has a very laid back attitude about it all. We know a lot about his history but I never felt we got to know Vin until later - he's a follower and yet he was the first to try and help Nathan after Mary was hurt. He immediately defers to Chris.
Buck - Is the most open and we learn the most about him. He is a riot, big brother and ladies man. He has a history with Chris and is not afraid to share - he has no filter.
Nathan - is just the happiest ex-slave ever and at least in the pilot finds Ezra's dislike of him something humorous to over come.
Ezra - is a conman. He only went along for the gold but then we see he's got a conscious and is great with kids - something I wish they used more often. The conman with the heart of gold - it's cliche because it works.
Josiah we know he was a preacher who lost faith and has a death wish.
JD - Well JD's just this annoying kid but I loved him from the moment he jumped off the stage. He scenes with Buck are the reason I kept watching.
I didn't become an Ezra girl until much later - It was Buck and JD first
