What would be a piece of classical music that a fairly talented 11 year old could learn on the piano? Pre 1870.

As you might have guessed, it's for fic :)

um...Chopsticks?

failing that, something by Beethoven? (the guy knew Napoleon 1st, so he's a safe bet, right?)

or Methos could play the panpipes. (you said Classical) ;)

fur elise

all piano-playing kids strive to learn that.

it's difficult but not impossible and sounds quite impressive :P

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, it was written in 1801. After an awful lot of practise I could play it when I was 12, and I wouldn't describe myself as particularly talented with the piano, though I wasn't bad at stuff I liked (hence the Moonlight). I used to be able to play the first movement well (the one everyone knows), and wasn't so good at the second and third movements.

I could play Fur Elise too, and a bunch of stuff by Bach - Sheep May Safely Graze comes to mind here.

I'll keep that on tap for the next time I need a piece. Thank you!

I was going to suggest the Moonlight Sonata too, so now you have two votes for that!

I'd say Fur Elise or Moonlight Sonata - both actually easier than they look, and sound really impressive. :)
