ithildin: (My Photos - Zion Cliffs)
[livejournal.com profile] mischief5 sent me this travel article about Southern Utah from the New York Times. The writer follows the path of the first mapping expedition to the Escalante area in the 1870s. Nin, my brohter and I are heading back there ourselves at the end of May!

Cool! I wasn't sure if that was near you but it sounded interesting.

Kanab is about an hour, Bryce twoish, and Escalante is four. Kanab is where the Best Friends (http://bestfriends.org/) shelter is that I've posted about in the past.

Thanks for the link!

You have to (and this is a definite have to) stop and see Lower Calf Creek Falls (http://www.utah.com/hike/calf_creek.htm). It's about a 3 1/2 mile hike to the falls (easy to moderate with a couple of advanced spots, but nothing too hard) and so worth it. It is literally like stepping back in time and getting to experience how American Indians lived.

Might not make it this trip (my back injury has been hell lately), but will add it to the list!

OOOH, if y'all head into Boulder (right outside Escalante) there's a really cool Anazazi village ruin at the museum. I love UT. *sigh*

We're actually staying in Boulder, or at least just outside. We really want to go eat at Hell's Backbone. Have heard so many wonderful things about it!

Will check out the museum. Thanks for the tip!

Hell's Backbone = Great Food & Great Drinks! And Lord knows you'll need one after that road. I still shudder thinking about it. It's a long, long, long way down and NO guard rails... *snort*

And Posey Lake isn't too far...

(Okay, okay, I'll stop. I just ♥ UT. Can you tell?)

I'm thinking that maybe we need to take you with us [g]

The road will make Nin happy. Strange child that she is, she loves those sorts of roads. Me, I get white knuckles.
