I hate it when I have comments I want to reply to on an LJ post, and I can't because no access from work, so instead, crosspost a whine about it. So I'll have to respond 9 odd hours from now.

Some of it was in regards to the facebook/twitter linking thing. But just wait 9 hours [g]

Yeah, what's up with the facebook twitter linking thing. I *don't* want my lj content on my facebook twitter where people from work and personal relationships outside of fandom have access. I know you can security lock some things, but I have different accounts for different reasons. If it's all going out in duplicate, I would just simplify to one area and delete the others.

And, as much as I love keeping in touch with people, I don't want to sort through 4 sets of duplicate posts on my friends each day: LJ - crosspost to Dreamwidth, crosspost to Twitter, crosspost to facebook.

Thing is, not even those locked posts are safe. A person can comment on your locked post, maybe quote a large chunk of it, and repost that to Facebook/Twitter, complete with a link. Imagine bitching about your job, mentioning how you are looking for a new one, then someone crossposts their reply to that, with all the details left for people to see.

I opted out because I don't want to use the option. However, I did read it even knowing I didn't want to do it. It only works on public posts - not locked lj posts and both parties have to have the option on in order to link or copy part of your post. As it is, anyone can copy and paste anything from any source and/or link to it on the internet and that has nothing to do with LJ, facebook or twitter. Which is why you should know (as much as you can) who you have friended and give access to your posts.

Nothing is failproof of course. And dishonest people abound. If I find that someone has abused my trust I will unfriend them and possibly put tighter controls - even to the point of only giving access to people I personally know. But that is a sad state of affairs because the only reason I know some of these amazing people is because I did open a door here and was able to meet them.

Both the FAQ (http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=279) and the news post (http://news.livejournal.com/129190.html) specifically say that crosspost works on both public and flocked entries, but that only public posts will default to crosspost.

# Once you enable Facebook and/or Twitter Connect, only your public LiveJournal posts (those marked as "Everyone") will default to cross-post, but you can override this on a per-post basis beneath the text box.

# If you set your default to cross-post comments, ALL of your comments, including screened and Friends Only comments, can be cross-posted whenever you choose. [emphasis mine] Only public comments, however, will be preselected to cross-post. If you wish to cross-post a Friends Only or screened comment, you will need to select the cross-posting option manually when you post the comment. Of course, you can override your settings on a per-comment basis, so you have complete control over whether to cross-post each and every comment.

So yes, you have to choose it manually, but comments posted in flocked entries can still be crossposted, with quotes from the original post and/or references to it.

And yes, anyone can copy&paste, which is why most of us do take care when deciding who to give access to. No, both parties don't have to have the option on: one of the commenters tested it with an flocked post and some friends; others have since tested it too. I am reading the comments, and I'm currently at page 35.

Definitely worrying. However note that in every sentence it states *you* have to either manually choose or override yourself for the option to work. No one can come to my LJ and override or manually choose it for me. *I* have to do it.

Once again, that said it is very easy to simply copy and paste. If someone were truly interested in spreading around your content that is so much easier done than playing around with this crazy system in order to figure out how to outsmart it *g*. They can link to my f-locked posts, but unless they are friended anyway, they will simply get either an error link or a link telling them they don't have access.

However you certainly can copy and post any sentence from my comment here and paste it onto your community. It has nothing to do with this option. If no one told me I would never know.

Anyone can copy part of a f-locked post and go to their facebook and twitter account - paste it on and tell people where they got it. You don't have to have the lovely new settings and so-called *kewl* stuff to do that.

No, that's right, you don't. But up to now we've operated under the assumption that people will honor the posters wish and not spread what was said in an flocked post around. You had to deliberately choose to copy, paste and spread the word around.

Now all you have to do is tick a couple of boxes in your settings, and the public comments you make automatically get shipped off to Facebook/Twitter, or if you are used to using just the keyboard and not the mouse to post, you can send the post off unintentionally. I've read that it especially affects people with disabilities, who might have a hard time moving their hands from their keyboard to their mouse and vice versa, and have gotten used to a certain number of key presses (tab+enter has now turned into tab+tab+enter, which apparently also messes with screen readers for people with vision problems).

So yes, true privacy is an illusion on the internet, and I'm not that worried of being connected to my full name (although I'd rather not have my students having a peek into what I do in my free time), but I'm bothered by LJ springing options no one wants for various reasons onto people, buttons I dislike showing up in my carefully crafted journal, and finally, having these sites which I use but am mostly unhappy with shoved in my face wherever I turn.

I will remove the buttons via Greasemonkey, but I resent having to jump through hoops and using a third party application when I should be offered an option to disable this on my journal, comments in it, and communities I maintain/mod.

Thanks. You too. It's been interesting. And you're right. I resent having to jump through hoops too. ANd it's one more thing you have to think about and make sure your settings are just so our you can get into something you don't want to.

However, per your prior comment you state all you have to do is click on a couple of boxes on your settings. But *you* still have to manually go there, find the boxes and click on them for that option to work. I can't go to Ith's settings (for example) and click them for her. She has to. It doesn't go there by default (thankfully!). You physically have to make the point of going to your settings, finding the boxes, clicking on them and hitting save for that to happen.

Ur, I chose not to. But, paranoid as I am, I did go to my settings to make sure they weren't check-marked by error from me or LJ.
