Just saw an advert during Psych for a new series called 'Nikita'. Are we doing it again? What is it so far, two movies and a TV series? Anyone know anything about this most recent incarnation?

Yeah, the original movie, Point of No Return, the first tv show (which is how I got into internet fandom!) and now this one. It doesn't look as good, IMO, as the last tv show. Nikita and Michael have different backstories this go-round. It could be okay, I guess, but meh. I loved the last tv show SO much that I am skeptical.

Well, I'll give it a try and see what it's like.

Saw the premiere episode at Comic Con and it kicked ass. The difference this time is that Nikita goes after the people who turned her into an assassin in the first place. Maggie Q rocks as Nikita.

Will have to check it out.

It's got Maggie Q as Nikita. That gets my vote. I like the fact they've changed some of the background. If it were going to be a complete knock off of the original, there wouldn't be any point. It'd be an insult to the fans and the first show (and the first movie which, heh, a lot of TV fans complaining about the new version are forgetting) alike.

You're the second person to mention Maggie Q and I have no idea who she is [g] Will now got to IMDB to educate myself! I did see the movies prior to the TV series, which I loved, so may as well check this out too.

Maggie's awesome. Did you see Live Free and Die Hard? She was in that. One of the bad guys. She's been in other stuff too, but that's the last project that I remember seeing.

I loved them both, but didn't always have easy access to the series. Hopefully this one will stick around long enough that I can properly enjoy it.

I looked her up, and no, I haven;t seen her movies. However, her middle name is Denise, so I'm inclined to like her [g]

I've seen several people wishing that the creators had changed the names of the characters to go with their changed backstories, so that the new series could be more easily imagined as in the same universe as its predecessor (not that that's feasible, as the frachise is named for the lead character). And I've seen a lot of enthusiasm for the lead actress (of whom I'd never heard before this, either).

I never saw the previous series, but [livejournal.com profile] tv_elf was fond of it, so that's my association with it...

As one such fan, I was really peeved that, at least, they kept the "Michael" name as the love interest. I wish they'd changed that name, too, because the Nikita/Michael relationship from the original was my first fandom 'ship and to me it's like remaking the X-Files and naming the new characters Mulder and Scully, but changing all their histories around to make them different people. It hits a nerve.

I don't mind it as much with Nikita, because her name has always been Nikita except, I believe, in Point of No Return. It's just that they've changed all the other details but left in the one that hits most fans where they care the most.

Sorry for the tl;dr, but I feel like I could've loved this show had they waited 5 more years and renamed the male lead.

...not that that's feasible, as the franchise is named for the lead character.

I think it's feasible. It's just a matter of treating "Nikita" as a code name for the character rather than her birth name. It's a spy series after all. There was a Bond spoof in the sixties that had a lot of fun treating "James Bond" as just a code name.

I hated the movie with Bridget Fonda but loved the TV series. I can't see me liking the new one - I'd always be seeing Michael and Nikita as I remember them.

I loved the original French movie (Luc Besson, for the win!) hated the American remake, and didn't go near the first tv series. Am a bit wary of this, too, but shall probably succumb to watching the pilot!

Heh, while I liked the lady that played Nikita in the original French, I didn't much care for the movie overall. I liked the American movie just because it had Gabriel Byrne in it. What I really loved was the first TV series. I haven't seen anything about this second one that's made me feel like checking it out. Of course people have been talking about it reminding them of Dollhouse and I couldn't get into that so...

I thought Anne Parillaud was great in the original, and it also had Jeanne Moreau, Jean Reno, and Tchéky Karyo! I also was lucky enough to see the original on the big screen (totally showing my age here :-P) and all I can say is that kicked arse, especially the restaurant scene.

I love Gabriel Byrne, but I don't think the US version of the character of Michael had the same amount of sleazy inner conflict Tchéky's version had. What can I say? I like 'em pervy!

I watched the new TV version today, and all I can say is: that's not frigging Michael! Was the other TV Michael this unambigious? I'm now getting curious.

I thought Anne Parillaud was great in the original...

I own Anne as a vampire in Innocent Blood and as Queen Anne in The Man in the Iron Mask. I'm not fond of subtitles, I watch anime dubbed when I can, and the only movies that I actually own and watch subbed are Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero. I wouldn't even have given the original Nikita, being in French with subtitles, a try if I wasn't a fan of Anne's.

...it also had Jeanne Moreau, Jean Reno, and Tchéky Karyo!

I don't much care about Jeanne Moreau or Tchéky Karyo. I like Jean Reno, but I prefer him in The Professional and Ronin.

What can I say? I like 'em pervy!

I prefer Byrne's version to Karyo's, but my true love is reserved for Roy Dupuis' Michael in the USA series. He was fantastic!

I watched the new TV version today...

I didn't bother.

Was the other TV Michael this unambigious?

While I wouldn't call Roy's Michael sleazy/pervy I sure as HELL would never call him unambiguous. He was thoroughly complicated. I didn't bother to watch the new series debut in part because I saw someone excited about the new Nikita knocking the original TV series and Alias while talking the new series up. If fans of the new series have no respect for those shows I can't have any respect for their taste.

*Nods.* We're doing it again. It is two movies, the original French and the American remake, and the first TV series on USA. The most recent incarnation is a production for the CW. It's down by McG with the kind of young cast to be expected both as a McG production, and as a production for the CW. While I've liked Shane West, the actor playing Michael, since he was just one of the kids on Once and Again I can't say as I've seen anything about it that makes me want to watch. Of course I liked the TV series on USA better than either the original movie or the remake, and the remake had Gabriel Byrne in it so...
