On winterhart's LJ, I just found out that Anne McCaffrey passed away:

Random House Books has also acknowledged the writer's death. A post now up at the publisher's site reads, "McCaffrey died at her home in Ireland on November 21st shortly after suffering a stroke."

The first SF book I ever read was 'Restoree', and the Pern books followed soon after - I wore out several paperback sets of the original trilogy. She had such an influence on me when I was a teenager; she was the doorway into a whole new world. I met her once at Norweson back in the 80s, and remember it vividly. She was so full of joy, and had a sparkle about her. She'll be missed.

I never met Anne but her books take up a large proportion of my shelf space and I to am on second and third copies of many of them. Sad, sad news.

I first came across her works in the fall of 1974 when the short story "Weir Search" showed up in a collection. I have been following her ever since and have infected my wife and children with reading her.

We are all saddened by this loss, but as Ann said back in August when it was announced that she had to cancel this year’s appearance at Dragon*con: “Sorry that old age came up and bit me on the a**.” We all agree.

I actually dug out and re-read the Crystal Singer trilogy a few months ago.

She will definitely be missed. Truly one of the Grand Ladies of science fiction and fantasy.

I saw the news on Neil Gaiman's Twitter. Sad news indeed, my first taste of the genre was through her books too. A bad day for writing as I also discovered that Shelagh Delaney has passed away too and A Taste of Honey is one of my favourite plays/films. :(

Thank you for sharing the news. I'm not sure when I'd have heard otherwise. I first read Anne McCaffrey when I noticed the dragons adorning the cover of Dragonsong in the library at my junior high. I must have been 12 or 13. I'd devoured the first two books in Jane Yolen's Pit Dragon trilogy, and was looking for more science fiction stories involving dragons. I have a number of Anne McCaffrey's books in my house, some in paperback others in hardcover, and I will miss her.

So sad, thanks for letting us know. The Pern books are still some of my favorites, ever, and I just picked up a new set of Crystal Singer books, as the old ones were falling apart. She will be so missed.
