It occurred to me that I have no involvement in Tolkien fandom, and yet, it's my one true love. Is that odd? (Yes, probably.) When I was a teenager, I ate, drank and breathed Tolkien. Totally and utterly obsessed. I bought every related book I could find, and I even have an LP of Songs From Middle Earth. I even tried to join the The Mythopoeic Society. I say tried, because I joined at a con, paid my membership in cash, and they promptly lost all record of the transaction. After writing to them for nearly a year, with no luck, I gave up [g] But here I am, all these years later, still in love, but not involved in any sort of online fandom. Not in email, or LJ (other than scanning Middle Earth News), or anything in between. It just seems that most of what's online is fanfic related, and I've never had any interest in fic when it comes to Middle Earth. For the most part, it's become an almost entirely internalized fandom for me. Which is fine, but I kind of miss the personal interaction from the 'old days' :)

Date: 2007-07-28 02:09 am (UTC)From:readdevoured everything Tolkien wrote when I was in junior high. I once did a book report on "The Two Towers". Imagine doing a time-limited report on the middle book of an epic like that. Right, young and dumb.Anyway, I discovered fanfic while looking online for 'more' Tolkien and Middle Earth. I was very underwhelmed by the LotR fic but rediscovered my love for Highlander. And the rest as they say is history.
But I still have very little interest in LotR fandom.

Date: 2007-07-28 05:58 am (UTC)From:I've just really enjoyed going back taking the time to savour each book, and I added the Silmarillion to it. Which I found far more enjoyable then I realized.
AS for fandom I'm not really that interested in reading the fanfic, though ideas are floating about writing something. (Just as capnofmyheart, heh!)
Now Dr. Who is an interesting one for me. I have only actually seen about three or four episodes. But as a young adult I was CRAZY for the books. Between an enabling, globe-trotting, brother of mine and myself, we amassed a collection of well over a hundred books and I just LOVED them. Especially the Baker era Dr.
As for the fandom on the 'net... It just isn't my thing.
Weird, that's me...
