ARGH!! I am so tired of the frelling Sopranos! What the hell is so special that they deserve their own song and dance number? And better than House? I don't think so. And James Spader over Hugh Laurie?!?!? Insane!

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert? I swear I don't get why they're so popular. Baffles me utterly.

Why weren't there nominations for Slings and Arrows? One of the best series on TV and not one nomination!

Neil Patrick Harris was robbed.

Ugly Betty should have won its category hands down.

And then there's Battlestar Galactica. I guess I should be shocked they even got nominations and shouldn't have expected a win, but damn!

I really should know better than to watch the damn show, shouldn't I?

Why weren't there nominations for Slings and Arrows?

Because the Emmy awards are designed to honor excellence in American TV programming. Canadian != American.

*nods* They have, like, half the aggregate of Gemini noms for third season. I wouldn't worry about them. :-)

I'm not worried for them. It just makes no sense they didn't get a notice.

Yes, but S&A airs on Sundance and should be eligible the same way BBC shows that air on US channels are. Extras won an Emmy, it's a British show.

According to IMDB (not exactly the last word in accuracy, but still useful), Extras is a co-production of the BBC and HBO. Slings and Arrows is a production of Rhombus Media; there is no American co-producer.

I took a look at the Primetime Emmy Awards Rules and Procedures document of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. There are at least two points in the listed criteria for eligibility which would exclude Slings and Arrows.

  • Programs (and individual achievements within them) are eligible for nomination if they were originally aired or transmitted during the eligibility year in any primetime period (6:00 PM - 2:00 AM) (i) by broadcast to at least 51% of the total potential U.S. television audience or, (ii) by pay/basic cable transmissions (including by way of example so-called basic cable, pay cable, pay television, pay-per-view, interactive cable and the like, and new in 2007, broadband) to markets representing at least 51% of U.S. television homes.
  • Foreign television production is ineligible unless it is the result of a co-production (both financially and creatively) between U.S. and foreign partners, which precedes the start of production, and has a commitment to be shown on U.S. television prior to the start of production.

As far as I know, Sundance (unlike HBO) is not available "to markets representing at least 51% of U.S. television homes." Also, Slings and Arrows does not seem to have an American co-production company.

Man, I love the Sopranos like, like a loving thing. Though I would put them in a vastly different category from House, which I also love. Too bad TV calls them both Dramas, because they're different types of dramas.

Me, I just think the comedy/drama distinction has become a problem. Hourlong comedies are almost a new sort of animal; it's weird to have them competing with sitcoms. I remember when Ally McBeal was up against sitcoms, and it just made no sense.

I stopped wathcing the Emmy's a long time ago. Mainly because genre shows like Battlestar Galactica or Supernatural will never be acknowleged. A cold day in hell before Sci fi gets any respect.

As for James Spader - don't get me wrong I enjoy Boston legal- but he represents all that is wrong with the Emmys. He has won 3 out of 4 years. Is he really that good? Better than Hugh Laurie - don';t think so. Emmy needs to spread the love and not give the same people awards year after year.

As for Sopranos - never saw the love either

Neil Patrick Harris was robbed.

Sooo totally.

And then there's Battlestar Galactica.

They won an Emmy, not one that they bother to present on air but they did win "Outstanding Special Visual Effects For a Series" for the episode "Exodus, Part 2". It at least lets them say they are "Emmy winning." :)
