Giving up the dish

Well, we did it, Nin and I canceled Dish Network. Since I'd never been able to get them to come move my dish so the neighbour's tree in spring/summer didn't block my signal, and the many rate increases (for mostly channels I never watched), we decided to try out just using Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and an over the air antenna for a few weeks. Guess what? We didn't miss the dish. And $$$$ saved! So far, so good. Will see how we're liking it six months from now.

Oh, this interests me! How does the over the air TV work (isn't it weird to have to ask that?). I understand antennas don't have to go on the roof anymore?

There's indoor ones and outdoor ones. It depends on what the strength of the signals are like. I'm going to have to get an outdoor one. Been using the indoor one my brother set up on his TV as a test. But they're small and just clip on to something. The cable from the antenna gos to the Antenna in on the back of the TV.

Almost everything I watch is available a day later on Hulu+, and other things a day later on the network website, so brother is building me a small computer to hook up to the TV so I can use a browser to watch those. And a few things I've bought a season pass for on Amazon. Still way cheaper than the amount I was paying to Dish.

I'm not sure I could give up Directv. I have too many shows I'm hooked on. But your plan sounds like it worked out for you and Nin.

According to the spreadsheet Nin created (so we know if we're watching it on Hulu, Amazon or alternative means), we watch 36 shows, so we may beat you there :D

I had to quit cable -- it was just so much money, and I hardly watched any of it. I got an antenna and I get 2 stations, so I have news and weather. And Netflix.

I think in a few more years, there will be big changes. At least I hope so. I know a lot of people who don't want to shell out for what they don't watch!
