Yeah, I guess it doesn't really show in my journal, certainly not as much as my Egypt obsession anyway. My obsession with Japan started when I was really little - one of my first real memories is of thinking how beautiful my mam's kimono was. I've loved katanas for a really long time (before Highlander I'd like to add) and I mean love - I own two and I'd own more if they weren't so expensive. I've read every book I can lay my hands on about samurai, geisha, noh theatre, kabuki, netske, zen buddhism, shinto and Japanese history, art, music and mythology. I've studied bushido, kendo, Okinawan karate (by this I mean home study - I can't afford classes) and I keep trying to learn the language, but keep failing. Sushi is my favourite kind of food, I have a poster of The Great Wave on my wall and even modern Japan obsesses me - harajuku girls, technology, manga and anime, Miyazki is one of my all time favourite auteurs, the list could go on but I'd run out of comment. I guess you could say I'm a fan of Japan. *grin*

Is your mum Japanese? Or did she just own a kimono? I have a jacket made from an antique kimono that I adore!

I adored amber jewelery long before Jurassic Park, so I know what you mean!

I love Japan. I call it my alternate culture. It may have come from how I grew up, meeting many Japanese businessmen via my father's work. I've taken Japanese ans was actually quite good at it.

Have you read the Sano Ichiro novels?

Mum's Welsh, as are all my family. I discovered later it wasn't even a real kimono, just one of those silk dressing gowns everyone bought in the seventies, but it always sticks in my head as a kimono. Sorry, should have clarified that before!

I've never actually met a Japanese person, at least not beyond a 'hello' when I worked in the museum. As I've said before, I do wonder if perhaps it was a previous life, it just all feels very right, and like it's my culture. *shrugs*

The failure to learn is laziness on my part, really, I start to learn with good intentions, but then I get distracted and forget stuff, and then I just give up again. I'm terrible for that. It's why I have so many hobbies, I get bored very easily and then I'm like 'ooh, shiny thing' and I'm off on the next thing *grin*

I have not read them, but having looked them up on Waterstones I shall be adding them to my reading list! :)

The sense of ancient culture. Both my hometown Mostar and Sarajevo are old cities, and it is impossible to go to certain areas and not feel awed at the fact that many others have stood in the same spot for hundreds and hundreds of years.

The Sarajevo area itself has been settled since the Neolithic times, and there are still traces of that old culture, both in the artifacts and the faces of the people (Slavs, who arrived here during the 7th century, are taller and slimmer, while the Illyrians are shorter and stockier.) An interesting fact: Sarajevo was the first city in Europe to have a full-time (from dawn to dusk) operational electric tram line. Since then it has upgraded to more modern trams.

Mostar has the Old Bridge of course, built in 1567, and has been a site of annual high diving competitions for the past 350-400 years, depending on the source. Jumping off the Bridge is not without risks, since the Neretva River is very cold, and the air temperature can get as high as 45°C/113°F in the sun. The Old Bridge itself is 24m (78ft 9in)high.

I love to listen to you ramble - I am fascinated by the way your muse works and it always helps kick mine into gear.

Music - Mostly classic rock - Dean and I share musical taste. Been introducing Brett to Rush and the Who because many of their songs are available for download on RockBand - Nothing beats having him ask to play "Closer to the Heart" one more time with me - he's amazing on those fake drums. But the song that has been stuck in my head for days now is "Jai Ho - You are my destiny" from Slumdog Millionaire - I may have to hand in my rock credentials over that one but I love that song.
